I don’t think there’s much point in trying to assign random numbers, especially 8 digit ones.
1. It’s confusing. How are we going to keep them all straight? We would need to compile a phone book to keep track of them all, especially when we have a big empire as in the Demo game.
2. Could you imagine how much time it would take to issue the orders for 100 8-digit numbered units?
3. We would start referring to them for own own convenience as 4, 5, 8, etc. anyway, so why make the work?
3. One day people will be able to find out exactly how much military we have (Intelligence Agency), so why bother trying to hide it?
4. If we don’t want people to know how much we have before then, then why not number them sequentially and not replace the numbers? So if 4 Settler Division founds a city, or 8 Archer gets killed by a barbarian, don’t re-use 4 and 8. It will make them think we have a larger army that we really do. Isn’t that the whole point of trying to fool the other teams? And under this scheme our original worker can be 0 Worker Division.
I still prefer names, though

Re-naming our units is a fine strat., but other teams may find it unsportsmanlike. We could also rename our cities every so often to throw the other teams off.

I'm sorry it seems so confusing to you. I thought I laid out the number sequence pretty clearly, with the only random numbers being the first two and the last two; the numbers in the middle actually mean something .
Being covert in this fashion may seem a little silly to you or even unneccesary, but others think that presenting our enemies with little or no reconnaissance while giving us some ability to track our Military through the times could be valuable to us.
As for "One day people will be able to find out exactly how much military we have (Intelligence Agency), so why bother trying to hide it?"
I think that I'd rather have them have to wait until this point to be able to get this information than provide a means to get it through simple gameplay reconnaisance. This is going to be a tough game; we need to try to get any and all advantages that come without cost that are possible.

I think that is the best and simplest solution of all.

Are we going to start naming units or what? Doesn't this fall under the Ministry on the Interior?
Let's get hopping guys; units are falling fast, they at least deserve a name before they fall, do they not?
A list should be compiled by the Minister and posted so that the Consuls can do the names.

Ummmm... as much as I feel flattered and honored by this proposal, it is not a good idea. DarkCloud would have difficult times distinguishing between the Consuls and Warriors in his stories, as they'd bear same names.
I originally had an idea... naming the first warrior Beta, and the second Alva (sort of a pun). Naming the third Gamma sounded a bit dull, so I thought about Gary or something like that (as in garrison). But I never actually put a solid naming proposal together...
IMHO, for this to work smoothly, we should choose one person that will name new units at will. I have no problem with MoW naming units and MoI naming cities (plus perhaps Workers) - just that we should really make it clear who is responsible for thinking up names.

Well, it's quite clear that people seem to want the units to be named after people...
But oh well. I'll let other people do it. |
The poll indicates that the people definately want the units named after people on the team. Maybe it's not a good idea to use the Consul's names or the Minister's; but the rest should be used. Maybe we can use the Consul's and Minister's Names for the Towns; that wouldn't be too confusing as long as we amend the name of the Towns to somethig like Notyoueitherville or Tripopolis or even Dominae City.
I suggest that we give the job to DarkCloud; let him decide what to name each Town, Worker and Unit but with the guidelines set by the team. I would trust him to do a fine job.
