A conservative estimate puts the figure at $3 billion, dispersed in 900,000 different scholarships. By comparison, the United Negro College Fund raises approximately $29 million a year. There are over 21,000 white students at Texas Tech, just 818 black. Coday says he's not a racist and would refuse contributions from white supremacist groups. The Black Student Association says they'll wait and see the public's reaction to coday's venture, before deciding how to respond. "I think it's time for a serious debate in this country about what is and is not discrimination," said Coday.

I applaud this guy for having the guts to stand up and do something potentially unpopular like this.

The United Negro College Fund is not stupid at all: Minorities are poorer on average than white, period. Besides, this fund was set upo decades ago when discrimination was extremely real and damaging.

I have no problem with this kid starting this up: I also know it will never be more then a token thing set up as part fo a misplaced protest from someone who need to get a clue.

The UNCF was also started when a large number of universities weren't in the habit of admitting any blacks (whether by overt policy as in the south, or back door policy), and when the majority of blacks' opportunities to go to college at all were in private "negro" colleges, which didn't have either the history, or the social connections to have endowments.

The UNCF was for a very long time almost the only scholarship resource available to blacks.

Whether it's outmoded today is pretty irrelevant, as it's only one of a very large number of targeted scholarship funds, and represents a fairly small pool of overall scholarship money available.

Personally, I think merit scholarships should be available to anyone with high enough qualifications who doesn't have the economic means to go to college on their own.

What he's doing is the same exact thing as United Negro College Fund. Whether you think it's stupid or you think it's a great thing - at least be consistant. If it's ok to promote one racial group and restrict your scholarships for them only, then it is ok to do the same for another.

Personally, I think the whole thing is ****. A United College Fund for people of a certain economic status would be MUCH better than a fund for any specific group.

I understand what he's doing and why he's doing it, even if I don't agree with it.
