Chapter I
"DanQ looked around the vast expanse... he looked north to the grueling desert. He looked south toward the inhospitable jungle... wiping the sweat from his brow, he sighed... longing to return to his hospitable home... Then he looked toward the east- rolling plains, open lands, many opportunities. And he thought."

Meanwhile, in the north, WorkerDan raised his pickaxe high above his head, then jerked it down violently, cutting into the thick earth, tearing up clods of green land. As his worker cut into the hill, Minister of Internal Affairs Togas nodded his head knowingly. "It will only be a matter of time before Apolytonia has its mine... then we will be masters of the world." He whet his pen's ink on his tongue, then noted the date and the progress... 6 turns into the great game and Apolyton was already out ahead- commanding the greatest city in the land. All others would soon fall, bowing before the great nation. Yes, victory would be sweet"

Chapter II

The people were discontent. Recent polls conducted by Emperor Markos deduced that approval ratings were at an all time low, 50%... He knew not what he could do to improve them- mine more- found another city- raise the luxuries rate?

He pondered his dillema, hand tapping on the table, then started as the Minister of Internal Affairs appraoched him from behind, startling him. "Our recent incomes from the recently popped hut will net us with 25 excess gold to the treasury... perhaps we should throw a 'we love the emperor day' to please the populace?" He suggested.

"No." Markos waved him off. "We cannot do that- the people must wish a 'we love the king day' themselves."

Dominae brushed back his blonde curly hair and grimaced. "Then perhaps," he considered. "We should purchase another unit... Another settler in a few turns."

Markos grinned. "Perhaps that is the way."

"We shall see." Consul vondrack entered, black cape swiviling behind his thick, well muscled form. "The people will tell us what they want- we will not decide for them or else our approval rating will drop further."

"What do you mean?" Markos inquired, head dropping slightly to the side.

"I mean-" Vondrack dropped a report on Markos' desk. "That the people have spoken- they have demanded that their units be named."

"I cannot deal with such frivolities!" Markos exclaimed, pushing the report form his desk. "I have much more important things to deal with."

"Better things than the concerns of your own populace?" Vondrack arched a black eyebrow, eyes staring daggers into Markos clear orbs.

"YES! Certainly!" Markos jumped from his desk.

"Your excellency," Dominae cautiously reached out, putting an arm on Markos' shoulder, attempting to calm the man.

"Da**it man!" Markos shook off Dominae's gentle grasp. "Am I surrounded by children here! We are running an empire- not a popularity contest- who CARES about what we name the units."

"But Citizen DarkCloud has requested-" Vondrack stated, voice dripping with acid.

"What do I care what that citizen states- I have a forum- no sorry, an EMPIRE to run! Return to me in another twenty years."

"Yes, your excellency." Vondrack bowed, gathering the report up in his hands as he backed out.

Markos sank back into his seat, mumbling curses.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Into the Northlands...

Warrior BetaHound tapped the sand with his spearpoint. The spear tore through the sand, pushing past inch upon inch of yellow residue. He frowned. "The ground here is not good. No plant grow here. We no live in desert." He frowned. His civilization had much to accomplish, and this strange desert would not help them one bit. It would slow troop movement and delay expansion. He shook his head, continuing west... He walked through more sand- then, in a fit of rage, screamed and ran toward the north, thinking that the desert might end somewhere in that direction.

He was rewarded with a glimpse of the Great Northern Hills. Warrior BetaHound fell down in awe of the hills, buring his head in the greening turf before him.

Roads... Roads...

Worker Dan tilled his spade, striking the ground. Orders had come direct from Apolyton's dark Council of three Consuls that he was to erect a new road toward the south in order to stimulate trade from the villagers in the area.

"Why do I always have to do the work." He spat at the ground. "Why can't I rest- I've been working nigh on 200 years- will I never have peace." Worker Dan threw down his spade and sat on the grass.

A week later, a runner arrived, bearing a note reading: "Get Back To Work." Signed the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dominae, in his flowing, almost-calligraphic hand.

Dan stared at the note defiantly for a moment, then quivered. Perhaps he had gone too far... "Yes, perhaps I have." He shook his head, realizing that he had angered the most temperate of his rulers. He dreaded to think what the evil notyoueither, grim ____, or fiery vondrack would have to say to him when he returned.

"I had best finish this road." He stepped into the job with renewed vigor.

"Dumb Mountain no move. Move Mountain Move."
Warrior BetaHound laid into the mountain's side with all his strength, straining to push the immovable barrier further back. "Big Mountain no good for city. Good for defense, but no good for troop movement, settler movement, city placement. Move mountain." Warrior BetaHound strained harder.

After a few minutes of sustained action, he ceased pushing and began to curse, drawing his club. "Die dumb Mountain." He hit the mountain with his club, smashing into its dirt. The mountain rumbled.

"I beat mountain into molehill!" He screamed, and smashed the mountain again.

... Meanwhile, at the capital

"What do you think our warrior is doing?" Togas, foreign minister of Apolyton gazed into the distance, a strange expression on his face.
"I'm not sure." Regally robed Consul Ninot squinted through his monocle. "It appears he is striking that mountain with his club."
"That's what I thought." Togas nodded.
The two stared at the spectacle strangely.
"Should I fetch Trip?" Ninot asked, removing his monocle to polish it.
"Yes, I think so." Togas nodded, eyes rivetted to the distant warrior.
Ninot swirled and left the chamber.

*

"What? I can't have that damnabbit!"
"I am sorry, but it is true." Ninot flourished his greetings.
War Minister Trip scowled. "Why that damnable idiot! Get me a rider- the best!"
"When do you wish this rider to arrive? In two days with a live horse, or one day with a dead horse?"
"A horse! What do we know of horses! Has some fool scientist discovered horseback riding yet!"
"No, but I truly thought it might be easier- nay, faster if-"
"We don't have time to invent horsebackriding- just send our fastest trooper- and get him out there now- we can't have Betahound wasting his time under the damnable mountains-"
"Yes Minister, I will relay that information." Ninot flourished his exit, red and purple robes flowing as he left Trip's office.

Trip went back to considering the troop movement board.
"Lessee. I move this piece here." He picked up the second warrior and moved him toward the south, near the river. "And we'll conquer the jungle. Yeah, travel'll be faster by river- hopefully no charlies'll be present down at the head. But if there are, I bet that bigfree1 can deal with them appropriately." Trip spat on the wood floor. "Slingshots, clubs, the best equipment that money can buy. He'll whup tha motha*******."

Back to Betahound

"I move nor-west?"
"Y-Y-Yessssss." Sighed the runner.
"Nor-west move I?"
"Y-Y-Yesssss." Sighed the runner, still catching his breath.
BetaHound picked up his club, smacking it against his open palm. "I not able to move mountain."
"N-Nooooooo...." The runner replied.
"This better be good." BetaHound growled and sheathed his club, heading in a north-westerly direction."
The runner collapsed with exhaustion.

Production

"Production Production Production. We must emphasise production." Markos, Emperor of the second Mightiest Empire on Earth tapped his hand on the table.

"Yes, I certainly agree." Dominae, Minister of Internal Affairs declared, nodding his head.

"I agree." Consul Vondrack said succintly.

"If 'et be a goot idea- I'll follow it." Consul notyoueither nodded his approval. "And 'et will be a good idea, or I'll depose ye sometime in tha future, 'eh?" He smiled wickedly.

"Yes, I understand that quite well." Markos regarded notyoueither with a somewhat
disturbed sideways glance. Notyoueither laughed.

"I too would be glad to voice my agreement on this matter." Consul Ninot declared.

"We are agreed then?" Markos asked.

All present nodded.

"Then onto the next order of business... What should we produce next?"

"A warrior! We must be prepared for war!" Trip declared in his strong, military, ringing voice.

"I concur, times of uncertainty demand desperate measures." Ninot spread his hands in agreement.

"We must be prepared for predatory nations." Consul vondrack glared around the table. "And we must be prepared to prevent coup'd'etats. His eye lingered on notyoueither's boisterous frame.

"Oh, I wouldn't be a'ferd." Notyoueither laughed. "I pose no threat to ye. Just some kind joking, it all be."

"I third the motion- any against." Markos quickly broke in, eager to interrupt the disagreement among his consuls.

"Very well then, the motion passes." Markos announced, hearing no voices of dissent.

"Cough" "Cough"
"Jungleflies no taste good." Warrior Bigfree1 spat into the warm waters at his feet.
"This land not be good for life... Good for production maybe, in future, but not good for life, foundation of city. Methink Apolyton got skrood in the establishment of empires. Me want to join other civilization."

*

In the North

Warrior Betahound trudged over mountain after mountain, then ascended the highest peak.
"Me king of mountain!" He called, his voice echoing from the cliffs, into the valley. He looked far around him, as far as the eye could see, and saw a great plain to the north, then turned to the east and saw a large oceanic expanse. Next, the pivoted toward the west and saw another ocean.
"This no good." He stated. "Peninsula good for one city, but not much... Although, Me see mushrooms, big mushrooms in center of plain. Me think mushrooms taste good... Use them to become viking-like berserker, and smoke out. Get high on low grounds. Heh. Heh."
Warrior betahound vaulted off the mountain and ran toward the mushrooms, intent on his treat.

Worker Dan
"I don't like this but one bit. This forest is in the way of future development.
I have orders to destory it however."
"Sigh." Worker Dan frowned, looking at his work- another 100 years and I'm still working- haven't these people heard about early retirement- sheesh."
And he went back to his spade, digging up a tree... the old way- before saws were invented- people dug up trees to destroy them. That's why destruction of forests took so long.

The sounding of the drums was incessantly loud. "Boom. Boom. Boom." Warrior BetaHound looked around leerily, seeing no one. "Any one home?" He asked in a slightly shaking voice.
"I know this tribe-camp with many goodies- but I see none."
"Boom. Boom. Boom." The sound drew near. BetaHound retreated to a high spot to see what was causing the noise.
He looked around the plateau and frowned. "Barbarians." He muttered, seeing three tall warriors in front of him, approaching in an ellipse pattern.
"No goodies." He spat and drew his club. "Smash time begin now." He readied for the assault.

*

"We lost him?" Foreign Minister Togas peered into the volumnious report that Consul Ninot had just handed him.
"Damn." Markos G., Ruler of Apolyton cursed and clenched his fist.
"He wasn't the brightest of them all, but he was the bravest explorer we had." Ninot sighed.
"We will kill ten barbarians for every one of our men felled." Vondrack declared haughtily, raising his head. "I myself will raise an army for this purpose-" Consul vondrack stormed out of the room, intent on accomplishing his purpose.
"The ... Etruscans ... must pay." Consul notyoueither seethed, folding his hands and nodding his head conspiratorially. "As... must... those... responsible." His eyes drifted towards the fuming Minister of War.

Minister of War, Trip cracked his big administrative stick over his knee. "BetaHound was my best. He should have been invincible- now he has stirred up opposition in the north!
Why did he have to stumble across that lost tribe on the peninsula! Three against one! How could he have met the opposition. We must train more to avenge him and to avenge the cause!"

"Perhaps... someone else should... train others..." Consul notyoueither frowned.

"No, I support Trip." Markos waved notyoueither down. "He could not have predicted those barbarians."

"Perhaps... perhaps not." Consul notyoueither replied, shrugging nonchalantly. "Perhaps..."

"But he will eliminate the threat now that it is present." Markos declared.

"I propose negotiation." Togas stated, hand flying out of his toga to make a pointing finger in the air.

"We will not... negotiate... with barbarians. They are not... civilized." Consul notyoueither spat.

"I am sad to say, Minister Ninot, that we will not negotiate with barbarians." Markos stated, shaking his head. "We cannot afford them that legitimacy."

Ninot sighed, then bowed.

*Meanwhile

" Aaaaaaaahahahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhh" Warrior bigfree1 screamed and collapsed.
"Me Thug." The first Barbarian, stepping out of his hut, laughed.
"He Ug." A second Barbarian, this one a female, pointed to a third, just emerging from over a hill behind bigfree1.
"She Zug." The first Barbarian pointed toward the female, then spoke at greater lengths- "Perhaps you meet our northern cousins- Huey, Dewey and Louie?"

Bigfree1 continued to scream.

"Perhaps not?" Thug unstrung his club and made for bigfree1.

*

"Another attack!" King Markos was horrified.
"Yes, your excellency." Togas bowed low to his liege.
"We must immediately cease work on the Granary and produce another warrior!" Markos rose, screaming, holding a hand steady in the air.
"He is not dead yet-" Ninot pointed out.
"Nor will he be." Trip declared. "He knows what to do."
A loud scream cut through the assembly. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
"What was that?" King Markos asked.
"Nothing." Trip answered quickly... almost too quickly.
"Sound... does... carry so... does it not?" Notyoueither grinned wolfishly.
Trip snarled, hand going to his broken stick.
Notyoueither laughed.

"Good Sirs!" The Minister of Internal Affairs held up his hands, putting an end to the squabbling.
"Please consider the facts.

"We have a warrior to defend our nation- remember Alva."

All gathered nodded grudgingly.

"Well, please realize that we do not wish to set our nation back futher by switching from a granary at this point of time." Dominae continued.
"And I truly believe that Alva can handle the defenses."
"I can vouch for that!" Consul Ninot raised an eager hand.
"Yes, truly." Dominae nodded, acknowledging the interruption, then continued, "Perhaps we should produce another Warrior after the Granary. It would only set our "master plan" back two turns or so... and provide us much needed protection."

The gathered nodded, considering the proposal

"Our ambassadors to the Persians have been counseling war." Foreign Minister Togas respectfully approached Emperor Markos, seated on his iron throne.
"And Consul Vondrack is one of the major proponents of the idea. He seeks revenge on them for their betrayal and lies." Togas continued.
"But, it is only fair to warn you that our Minister of the Interior, Dominae wishes to remind you that we are not ready for war."

"I think we should open this discussion to the people." Togas continued, bowing low. "Their will must decide the future of our nation or our nation may cease to exist."
"It is always something, is it not." Emperor Markos frowned.
"First the destruction of BetaHound, then the stand of bigfree against the barbarians, then the betrayal of the Persians and now the meeting with these "Gamecatcheese" How can we trust any of them?"
"We cannot." Togas stated, brushing his blue toga back. "But we must be prepared for any possible threat of war. I have already heard the preliminary discussions about upgrades to swordsman."

"But what about the archers." Markos waved his hand in askance.

"MY LIEGE!" The large wooden doors to Markos' audience chamber flung wide open as a disgusted Minister of War stormed into the room.
"My Liege- I implore you- listen not to this man-" His arm flung back, pointing behind him to the open-flung door.
No man materialized.

"What are you speaking about." Markos glared at the rude Minister.
"My Liege," Trip went to his knees. "This man, this consul recommends danger."

"What danger does he reccomend, and who is it."

"You barbarian-fiend." Consul Vondrack strode coldly into the chamber. "You have no manners." He regarded Trip with a disdainful stare, then turned to Markos.
"Emperor Markos," He spoke. "We have good reason to believe that it would be best if we would research Warrior Code next, after Bronze Working- we must think about defending our cities and perhaps spend a few coins to speed this research."

"He recommends folly!" Trip screamed. "My men will die because of his misdirection!"

"Now really," Markos glared at Trip. "Archery has its advantages."

"But it is a useless unit!" Trip demanded. "Minister Dominae, despite opposing me in my stance toward war with traitors, supports me in this. Believe me- I am a fighting man- archery is useless."

"But it is tradeable!" Vondrack declared, flourishing his hands. "We can get the Gamecatcheese on our side. They will become our allies against these damned Persians.
"I see many benefits in researching Warrior Code."

"What about their Immortals?" Markos asked, suddenly swiveling to face his foreign Minister again.

"Do they have them yet?" Trip asked pointedly.

"No, but we believe they are nearing a breakthrough." Foreign Minister Togas replied evenly.

"Lousy backstabbers." Trip slammed a fist into his free hand.

*

"No settlement south of the Parallel... This sounds mighty suspicious." Consul Vondrack poured over Togas' recent agreement with the Persians.
"No movement of our troops... And yet they have a warrior, Morris, very near our capital. How interesting." Vondrack tapped his hand on the oaken table, then rose, gestured for a servant to come over and whispered in his ear.

Minutes later, Ninot arrived.

"Ah, Consul-" Vondrack smiled as Ninot entered.
"Consul," Ninot replied, nodding his head slightly, then looking around the room. "I have not been so lucky as to be invited here in the past."

"Oh," Vondrack shrugged. "We must truly change that, no... Come, sit down." He gestured toward a padded seat.
Ninot sat. Vondrack stood and picked up the treaty papers. "You know what this is called." He pointed to the papers.

Ninot peered forward. "Treaty papers?" He asked innocently.

"Appeasement papers." Vondrack frowned, thrashing the papers wildly about in the air.
"You know what backstabbers think of appeasement?" He asked.
Ninot shook his head.
Vondrack made a cutting motion across his throat with his index finger.
"Think on that." He said, setting the paper down on the table.

Ninot stared dubiously at Vondrack for a moment.

"You may leave." Vondrack declared, his voice suddenly full of steel.

Ninot got up, nodded good day to Vondrack and left.

Vondrack watched him leave, then approached the treaty and shredded it.
"This is say to kentonio of the Persians and our Ambassadors." He threw the pieces to the ground and spat on them.

"I have word that Warrior Theseus is heading south in a plan to "shock and awe" the CDGers into submission. They will have to enter into our pact and respect it if they see such force arrayed against them." oliver, Master of Intelligence stated blandly, holding a long scroll of dried parchment before him.

"Very good. All is going according to schedule." War Minister Trip pushed back his hair and nodded. "We have two of our four warriors infiltrating the enemy lands, we have one exploring the peninsula, and we have the green troop, BigFurryWarrior, fortified in our citadel. Everything is going according to plan."

Trip reached into a nearby jar and drew out a smidgen of spice. "Ah, the eastern spices." He smiled, looking at the purely ground white substance. "This will be our army's lifeblood. We will trade spice for iron."

"Ah, blood and iron. It always comes down to that way, does it not?" oliver replied.

"Yes, yes it does." Trip rubbed the spice between his fingers. "Trade begats power; and power begats envy... and envy... begats war."

"I will see to it that we know our enemies actions before they make a move." oliver declared.

"Good. Report their every move to me." Trip nodded, then waved oliver away.

Oliver bowed and left.

*

THE APOLYTONIAN EXTRA
... four of Consul Ninot's closest friends were killed yesterday in a raid upon the Consul's apartments in upper Apolyton City. It is said that they died defending the door to the Consul's apartments after the posted guards turned traitor.
... Following that, the Consul and his family were captured and shipped out of the city in a wheat caravan to the peninsula. A few days later, several of his other supporters were given the same treatment...
Sources say that the other Consuls had a hand in this as Ninot's conciliatory tones and measures had been an obstacle to their search for power."

"We will need to elect a replacement." Consul notyoueither declared, sitting around a nearly empty table

"D*** the constitution, we can rule together." Consul Vondrack slammed down on the desk with his curled fist.

"If we do not elect a replacement, the people will riot."

"Who cares what the people think- we cannot let our powers decline. We must be seen as strong." Vondrack declared.

"And we will- at least in their eyes, as long as we seem to serve the CONSTITUTION rather than the PEOPLE. WE both know that the people do not want to be served. We know that the people want to be lorded over and controled. They have no time to bother with elections and the such, nor have they the information. And we must keep this status as the quo. Therefore, we must appoint a new consul."

"Very well. Perhaps that might be the correct idea- but I like it not." Vondrack crossed his arms definatly.

"But it is necessary." Notyoueither declared and walked to a nearby chalkboard, picking up a finely cut piece of pink chalk. Notyouetiher considered the board, then bent forward and began scratching at the surface of the board.

"The way I see it," he stated. "We have two choices."

"There is one, the leader of the Democratic Party, this Mr.WhereItsAt... it is said that he is competent and served his party with distinction- but it is also said that he has some experience with cronism, nepotism and the like, so he should be easy to unmake... Then there is this other, redfern. I know little about him, but have heard that he is involved with some of the organized crime in Apolyton- so he too, should be easy to unmake, should he prove unmalleable to our plans."

"Neither are good choices." Vondrack spat.

"Neither may be good choices, but they are the only choices- the other, E_T, has already declared that he has no intention of superseding MrWhereItsAts claim to the party chairmanship... and if we passed over the chairman for the subordiante, we could run into risky revolutionary business."

"Neither are good choices." Vondrack repeated. "But," He declared. "I will have nothing to do with organized crime. In fact, I think we should use our leverage against redfern now to have him arrested and exiled. Apolyton, in these harsh times, cannot deal with a possible bribeable spy for the other side."

"Then, you support MrWhereItsAt?" Notyoueither leaned across the table and asked.

"Yes, I support him." Vondrack scowled. "What other choice do I have. He will have no power anyway. We already control the ministries and the winds of war- at best he might advise Emperor Markos against our wishes; and if he does that, we can easily throw him down."

"You have made a good decision." Consul Notyoueither nodded conspiratorially.

*

"Fifty one moskeetos."

"Fifty two moskeetos."

"Fifty ****ing three moskeetos."

Warrior Alva, son of the richest man in Apolyton smacked the bloodsucking insect on his arm and counted.

"Fifty four moskeetos." He cursed.

"Dee Rewards of dis peninsula must be proportional to the--- FIFTY FIVE MOSKEETOS- pain that I have to endure because of these- FIFTY SIX MOSKEETOS!"

He screamed in pain as another mosquito bit him on the leg, he drew his sword, reached down and smacked the bug onto the silver, then resheathed it.

*

"Foreign Warrior scream in anger... belike he be some berserker?" The barbarian stared at the incoming warrior with wonder.

"Belike I dare attack him?" The Barbarian wondered, scratching his head.

"All these foreigners, they make me want to scream- Treaty this, and Non-Agression pact that- I feel as though I have just spent the past few years back in Governemntal Civics class again!" Warrior Bigfree lamented as he moved through the jungle, still heading south.

"What's with these Elucidians and Gamecatcheese- why do they have to bother me so much- builiding cities behind me on the route, cutting me off from my family. Waahhh. I dislike being away from Apolyton for so long... I want to go HOME!" Bigfree stamped his foot in the mud impatiently, driving it down. He took a step forward... And failed to move; straining with all his might, he struggled to lift the foot.

"Why must there be so much jungle!" He screamed as he pulled at his leg, struggling to draw it up from the sticking mud.

"We are losing Gold, my liege." Dominae, Minister of Internal Affairs bowed to Emperor Markos.

"But we are researching Warrior Code-" Markos declared.

"It will be ready in eighttime." He stated.

"But in that time we will have lost- 16 gold!" Dominae declared, throwing up his hands to illustrate the point. "All that gold will be *poof* gone! Never to be recovered! Never to be used to quick-buy weapons for our warriors! Never!"

"But we will have Warrior Code, and the ability to build archers." Markos declared.

"Please, understand me- it is imperative that you do!" Dominae stated, bringing his hands together as if in prayer. "Please, this must not go on for more than threetime... War is not this important."

"We must discover more technologies for trade." Markos declared.

"But can we not trade the ones we have already instead of foolishly wasting gold on current research projects?" Dominae pleaded.

"I will think on this." Emperor Markos declared, rising from his throne. "Audience complete." He stated, clapping his hands.

Dominae bit his lip, bowed, and backed out of the room.

Warrior Bigfree read the invoice "Onward Apolytonian Soldier- to the southern nation of which we have heard. We must make contact with them and discover new advances. It is imperative to our future efforts." Signed, oliver.

He whined. "Now I can't go home for a full 50 more years!" then crumpled the note and continued south.
