So how's the game music? Remove this text

This is very important to me. One of the disappointments I had with Civ3 was the atrocious in-game music, especially that obnoxious Kenny-G-esque light jazz crap in the modern era.

I loved the music in 4x games like Ascendancy and IG2. So how is it here? And how easy is it to mod, if at all? (In Civ3, at least I could change the mp3s...)

But I thought crap tailored to be the least offensive to the greatest number of people defined artistic production in the modern age. Ergo, the Kenny G music was atmospheric

All the music is meant to sound like a Star Trek type sound track. Classical instrumental.

Who's creating the music? By classical instumental do you mean it sounds like that or that you actually brought in an orchestra?

Just mean it's instrumental. There's a trailer out right now that has some music in it:

I thought the music of Civ3 was an excellent idea. Unfortunately, they didn't have enough of it.

Cool trailer, Draginol.

It's mood music, Boris! I just thought that they should have had more styles--a true progression. Why did the creater of CPU Bach not pay more attention to the music?

Anyway, the music in the trailer was pretty good.

Mood music...what the hell kinda mood is that fake lite jazz stuff gonna put me in that relates to Civ3?

Naw, the modern era stuff should have been like a symphonic film score, similar to John Williams and such.

The modern era stuff should have been by Stockhausen, Berio and Boulez. Perfect accompianment to a nuclear war, IHMO.

Inflate your Upload Space

i think the galciv main background music is a lot like a Star Wars type of sound. It has a kind of soft warm feeling to it though (as soft and warm as space can be anyway). That's a bit refreshing after playing MOO3. It's like running from the pool and jumping into the jacuzzi. mmmmm....

Well, being pedantic ( ) The "Modern Era" of Civ seems to start around 1940-50ish, so I'd say music from the Darmstadt School would be more appropriate.

See, I always associate "Modern Era" as beginning c. 1900, which is why I think Mahler would be appropriate. He certainly sounds appropriate for modern warfare. Well, him and Holst, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, etc. The big symphonic sound is perfect for having your armor divisions roll over the enemy...

Mahler & modern warfare ? I hope not ! Shostakovich, sure. Holst - why not, (but only Mars, most of the rest of his music is somewhat "different")

Hmm... for the best modern warfare music it really has to be Black Angels by George Crumb. Its for string quartet.

Why not some Mahler? I can think of a several of his symphony movements that could serve as a soundtrack for tanks rolling over a field towards the enemy, such as No. 6, 1st mvt.

Civ3 modern age needed Caetano Veloso (sp?), Miles Davis, and Erasure.

Imagine nuclear war to the sound of Veloso or Erasure

Sorry, but I just can't associate my beloved Mahler with mechanised warfare. The first movement of 6 is more armoured knights "marching" IMO. Personally for a modern war with tanks I like to play the 2nd Mvt from Bruckner's 9th. Very loudly

I play Bruckner in the background a lot whenever I play civ games, esp. the 8th symphony. It actually seems to have worked pretty well for SEIV...

War of Art - the best music for modern warfare (IMHO) is Kraftwerk (esp. Die Roboter) or maybe Rammstein (esp. Seinsucht). Something about those Germans...

Boris - according to the bonus pack info, you can play your own mp3's during a GalCiv session.

Hmm, in-game mp3 player... I guess I'll be starting my first game of GalCiv in the key of C major. There's a prize for guessing what piece - but its not so hard to guess.

Would it be sacriledge to listen to Das Lied von der Erde during the game? Maybe I'll stick to the Bruckner and Holst, though.

BINGO !

It has to be the Strauss, doesn't it. Even if it has been done to death. Strauss is pretty good for Civ games too.
