Play the World: Latest Update? Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Everyone:

What's the latest on this coming over to the Macintosh platform? It's the missing element I need before I plunk down $2,700 for a new computer, printer, and software (sans rebates). The other gaming elements are already there — Civ III and the Mac-specific Civ III editor — so all I need now is PtW.

I want to continue my Civ gaming experience on the Macintosh! Don't force me to turn to the dark side!

I just got off the phone w/ MacSoft's Corporate office, and there is currently no discussion taking place on a PTW mac port.

That's not good news. As I've said before and I'll say again: I am *NOT* forking over thousands of dollars for a computer system that can't even support the *one* game I enjoy. Namely, Civilization. Furthermore, the latest iMacs being shipped no longer can boot into the Classic mode, either, so that keeps me from playing Civ II, no?

Fine. I can take my discretionary income elsewhere. Where's Asher? I need to ask about PC system specs ...

you should still be able to run classic through OS X(I do not know how well Civ2 works in classic mode, since i'm having a hard time finding a copy since i switched), all you have to have is OS 9 installed on the hard drive and OS X will run it through classic mode, which as far as i am aware works with just about everything now.

But as far as being able to directly boot into OS 9, i do not think you can do that now no. But everything that you do need OS 9 for should be able to run it through classic. Like i said i have not tried Civ2 in classic, has anyone?

I have to admit to a bit of confusion in regards to the Classic mode of operations under OS 10.2.4. If you need a copy of OS 9.x in order for X to operate in Classic, that in itself would be a challenge, as I don't think it's very easy to find copies of OS 9.

It'd be better if Classic were an integral part of X w/o having to have a copy of OS 9 on hand.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I agreee that Classic should have been better integrated into OS X. Up to Dec of last year(before the no boot into os 9 thing) OS 9 came preloaded onto mac systems(with a copy of it on a Cd), now i have no idea if apple is still doing that to provide classic compatibility or not.

Yep. All the Macs shipping now are X exclusive. Apparently Jobs, et al., are trying to kill off the OS 9 diehards by no longer giving them the option of having that as a backup of sorts to X. Crappy thing is, there are a number of good programs out there that do not have X equivalents yet.

Hell, I might have to keep my old iMac if I ever get a new iMac, simply so I can play Civ II on it.

Suffering from ads?

Not only will new iMacs still boot into OS 9, but Civ II plays perfectly well under Classic.

OS 9 Install CDs are a dime a dozen on eBay, and IIRC they're $20 from Apple.

Huh. I was told that Apple was no longer shipping iMacs that way ... they came *only* with 10.2.x on them and *nothing* else. Is Classic a part of the 10.2.x?

All I know is Coxy is right... OS 9.2 is on sale at the Apple site for $20... they just don't ship it with X.2 anymore.

Classic is an optional part of OS X that allows you to run OS 9 applicaitons through OS 9 in OS X. It reqiures that you have OS 9 installed on your system with OS X. As long as it is installed, you are able to run your OS 9 or ealier applications through OS X with out having to boot into 9. It works pretty well with most pre-OSX applcations.

and i also thought that we were going to get PTW, what happened?

Ironically, the purchase of MacSoft by Destineer altered the future. IIRC, Infogrames gave MacSoft the before the deal w/ Destineer. Now, under "new" management, MacSoft has shelved plans for a PTW port.

dojoboy:

I can't believe it. What the hell is management thinking? Oh, right, they're not. If they think Civ III hasn't done well on the Mac right now, it damn well won't get any better w/the lack of PtW.

Dammit to hell. I refuse to spend $2700 on a platform that I can't even enjoy one game on, and that has a frickin stupid OS policy that makes older games useless.

(P.S. How much would a good PC system cost? $1500?)

Actually, to do everday things and play games, not much; $800 - $1000 dollars.

Yeah, that's not much at all. But I've always preferred quality over quantity ... **sigh** ... plus I'm not that well-versed in the PC, other than knowing that it takes two steps there to perform a function that would only take one step with the Macintosh.

The part about Infogrames giving MacSoft the thumbs up was communicated by a Firaxis employee who passed along the code. This was all detailed over at the Mac CFC forum some time ago. I spoke w/ MacSoft after they were purchased by Destineer, which is how I learned there were no plans (discussion) for a PTW port.

Hmm ... y'know, a faint glimmer of hope within me is banking on the possibility that this was yet another miscommunication; IOW, the right hand doesn't necessarily know what the left hand is doing.

Dojoboy, who did you speak to? Was it a public relations type person, or someone actually involved with the PtW port (or other related programming endeavors)? I'm curious because I know departments w/i the same company don't always know what another department is doing — i.e., if you called my employer, got the advertising department and then proceeded to ask an editorial question, you'd likely get the wrong information (or, more likely, be transferred ... but it all depends on the time of day and who's in editorial when the call comes in).

Bradman, are you saying you've heard nothing about the cancelation of the Civ III PtW port for the Mac? I so hope that this is true, that it was all a miscommunication.

Well, put it this way. One day I called and spoke to Al Schilling (about MoO3). The day in question I called and spoke to a "receptionist" who then put me on hold for about 20 seconds and came back w/ the reply, "No." This company isn't that big, but I also hope PTW is in the mix.

The Destineer buyout of MacSoft did nothing but increase the odds of Mac PTW, but by the same token that does not necessarily mean that it is happening. Until you see a public announcement from MacSoft one way or the other, I think it is safe to assume that the status is undetermined. Beyond that, I'm not in a position to say - that's entirely in MacSoft's PR realm.

Well, it would do a world of wonder for Macsoft's public relations if they did go ahead with the PtW port. But if they don't do something soon, Civ IV will be coming out for the PC and Apple will be unveiling its OS 11 system.
