Okay, fairly simple poll. Some people think we should build 2 Warriors before our Settler, some want 1, some want none (?). So vote.

Haven't voted yet, but I am leaning towards 2 Warriors then Settler. 1 of those Warriors would head off east to start scouting our peninsula (before CDG does), and the other would be used for defense (we have to make sure we have at least 1 Warrior per city with all those barbs running around). That is, unless the build queue is affected in a bad manner.

Hmm, what would be a rough timeline for each of those options?

Keep in mind also that we can only currently support 4 free units with our single city and that we may temporarily have to adjust our science rate (though I think now we have enough money to be able to run a deficeit for a few turns).

Hey, where's the options for 8 Warriors or an Army for that matter?

I would really want 3 more warriors (2) for exploring and one more at home for emergencies like pillaging Barbs.

I'd like 3 but I don't want to delay our 2nd city...

Perhaps 2 is the best compromise.

Heh, I am only one who voted for staright to settler.
I just want to get our 2nd city as soon as possible. After the settler we can build warriors/spearmen, we will have a quicker start this way. I don't think we'd need the military too much right now.

Tired of ads?

The corresponce with the Persians indicates that stright to settler would be too risky at the time; expanding is only good if you get to keep the cities you found.

I'm not sure weather we need 1 or 2 additional warriors first yet.

I've been away recently (well, this weekend), so I fully expected some progress to be made in my absence (which is a good thing, because I do not want to be too critical...more of an advisor). So updates to the test scenario by jim_steer and consensus' on city placement by the general populace are fine with me.

And actually I'm also fine with Trip posting polls and proposals concerning matters related defense (city placement, and build queues). But there are two caveats:

1. I would like to work more closely with Trip on these matters. I know I'm not online as often as Trip, but working independently will get us nowhere.

2. I would also like everyone to understand that most of the polls posted here are unofficial. In my mind this is a little awkward, but seems to be the norm. Thus this poll, I feel, is more of a "get the feeling of what everyone thinks is best", rather than an actual vote on policy.

I plan to test everything out thoroughly myself (along with anyone's else help). I believe this to be the best starting point for any decisions concerning economic matters. As I said elsewhere, the Merc./Settler "pump" in Apolyton may just not be a good idea, no matter how much we want it to be. So, until further testing, let's take all these polls and such with a grain of salt.

One area that I believe requires an official poll is the location of our second city. We've had some good discussion on this already, and I'm still not sure what the team as a whole thinks is best. Thus, I will be posting a poll on this (with screenshots) very soon.

All this said, I'll weigh in on the real issue. I thought our relationship with the Persians was rather good for the time being. If this is true, I think we need 1 Warrior before our first Settler, no more. Part of the point of an early friendship is the option of expanding peacefully, which is absurdly powerful (sort of like playing on Chieftain and never having to worry about a thing - other than barbs - while you REX).

Is there consensus that the next three cities should all be adjoining the southern river?

We should decide number of cities to found along that river so we can plan for all of those cities at the same time.

Yes, the decision of where to put the next city is intertwined with the question of where we plan to place most of our cities around the capital. This is why I'll be posting a minimap of the best spots (obtained from all the recent discussion), from which people can vote on their favorite one.

Dominae

Thanks Dominae, I'm glad you're not giving me a hard time like others who want to turn this into more of a government than a game.

I'll certainly await your city placement thread. I think "blocking" them is more or less not a concern at this point, since we are (at face value) on very good terms with them, and we both realize that there's very bad terrain in the area.

And yes, we'll also have to work together on the build queue.

The problem I see with only 1 Warrior is that there's either a period where our city/settler are very vulnerable at exactly the time the barbs would be arriving, or it would slow our already bogged-down scouting efforts.

I've decided to vote for 2 Warriors first. I haven't yet seen conclusive evidence that our build scheme would be seriously hurt by this, and we've been set back far enough as it is. The appearance of all those barbs and the fact that we need to do as much scouting as we can ASAP means this issue is too important to ignore.
