I think this is a pretty good hypothetical topic of discussion.....assume for SOME reason the military is loyal to him and INTERNAL forces stage a cou'de'tat-what do you do? What happens?

I would go with the flow.

War should be avoided at all costs. Nothing justifies taking a human life. Even if they rape your family you should never take that person's life.

Chretien could be a dictator for all I know. I never know what's going on with the Canadian government, and He's been in charge for a long time anyways. Probably wouldn't notice a difference.

A military junta would never happen in the U.S. since its military is(currently) composed entirley of volunteers who like america and WANT to serve......if ordered to harm civilians en masse the U.S. military would dessert or fight back..........but this is a hypothetical

Does the dictator do things like squelching freedoms ( other than voting rights which are obviously forfeit)? Does the dictator appropriate wealth from others and disallow criticism?

I'm just wondering if plato was right and the ideal form of government is a dictaor that is a philosopher-king

Seriously, soldiers are trained to do what they're told and not think for themselves. Not to mention that the job attracts (and creates) alot of psychos.

Thats no gaurantee though. Many dictators just come from one branch. IIRC Pinochet was navy, while Assad of Syria was airforce.

But to the poll: I think the realistic answer would playing with my banana. Might get into subversive acts only wjen it is really to late and all power has been seized, or when the brurality of the regime would affect my personal life.

If by the time I have a family, the chances of me just trying to survive would increase I suppose.

I think Cromwell is much maliged and he did a good job, compare his rule vs the other revolutionary leaders

Hah! Charles was knocked off the throne because of religion, and the fact that he had the gall to let Catholics live in peace.

Cromwell put a stop to that, he sure did.

And he ran Parliament with a much firmer hand than Charles ever dared to.
