Welcome to TDNES:
In 2056, humanity seems on the verge of an age of peace and prosperity. After many decades of peaceful competition between the West and China for superiority have resulted in marvelous technological advances, the colonization of Mars, and economic prosperity for both blocs. Free electricity and water are available from the import of deuterium from Mars for Fusion reactors and highly developed fuel cell technology. Most of the world enjoys an exteremely high standard of living.
Nation building in the Middle East during the early part of the 21st century resulted in many free and democratic nations in the region, though with the advent of fusion, the lucrative oil business declined, and the economies of these nations suffered. Still, that region remained peaceful as never before in human history.
Only a few impoverished nations in Africa remained as reminders of the former Dark Age of humanity. When a new discovery promised to change the economic outlook of that region drastically for the better, it seemed the world could not become any better. That discovery was of a more efficient form of fusion, that operated on diamonds, plentiful in Central and Western Africa. Diamonds had always been in plentiful numbers there, but prices stayed high because of low mining production. With this discovery, mining output increased a hundred-fold, and prices remained the same due to the new importance of the gems.
Unfortunatly, humanity was never able to realize its potential for a Utopian Earth. Worried Martian politicians met in the summer of 2056. With the new diamond based fusion, it would make no business sense to import deuterium from Mars. The Martian economy and even society stood a good chance of collapse. The Martian Conference therefore took drastic action. They declared an independent People's Republic of Mars, and planned to attack Earth. All of the transport spacecraft were ordered to be refitted for war. A Martian War Fleet set out for Earth that winter.
Earth was caught off guard. Nuclear Weapons had long ago been eliminated by treaty, and there was no weapon capable of hitting the orbiting Martian Armada. There was no time to assemble a response, and no warning when the Martians struck. The Martians launched newly built Nuclear Missiles at the Diamond Nations, and devastated the region with nuclear fallout. Martian Ground Forces succedded in taking much of the cold north for military bases, to ensure that they could prevent Earth from building a force to retailiate.
The world was terribly shaken. Without electricity, and without resources, most governments collapsed. In the aftermath of the attack, many new nations and empires arose.

I'm going to grab the HRE
With the blessing of the Pope Giovanni Wine XIV, Mikael Kowalsky was elected as the new Prime Minister of the Holy Roman Empire, this was the first time that a Polish citizen hold such a position in the Empire.
PM Kowalsky immediatly started a program of upgrading and enlarging of the Military, in order to defend against the warmongers of Mars and also from a possible sneak attack from the Fascists Government of Paris.
Kowalsky also looked at the Democratic States of Asia, the United Kingdom and the Russians as the possible allies on this war against the evil forces of Mars.

ooc: Sheep, it will be mostly unmodded, but random events and NPC stories will be added often. Anemic is like weak, term is used in SMAC, btw.
Giovanni, the black squares are those that are uninhabitable due to the radiation resulting from the Martian nuclear attack upon the diamond states.

World News Network Update: June 1, 2058
Moscow, Russia- In Parliament:
Today, the budget for the new nation was resolved in both houses of Parliament. It authorises large increases in Defense spending, including a large build-up of the army and air force, as most of old Russia remains occupied by a militarily superior Martian government. Also, a full partnership treaty with the HRE was signed by the Prime Minister this week, opening new doors to coorperation between the two neighbouring democratic nations.
New Amsterdam, FSA- Government Square:
We go now to a live speech by the Premier:
Premier: "There is no nation in the world that has more freedoms than the good Federated States! Stalin once said that religion was the opiate of the masses, but we have learned that having a good life isn't necesarily bad. Still, Stalin was right about religion. To the East, it is being used by the dictators in the CSA to lead their people blindly. Those leaders wish to take away our freedoms! But we shall not allow them to! We must work hard to ensure that our freedoms are not repressed by those tyrants!"
Dar Es Salaam, SAS- With the 1st Infantry Division
Government troops are marching against militant rebels after rumors that villages were being pillaged and burned by rebel forces. The rebels are Communists, and have been a large trouble for the fledgling democratic government since its establishment, particularly in the north, where large areas of land are not under government control.
Tel Aviv, Islamic Kingdom:
Isreali anti-monarchists today bombed a government building. 13 employees of the crown were killed, and 20 injured. No trace of the militants was found, except for anti-crown slogans spraypainted nearby. (ooc: note that all of today's Isreal belongs to the Islamic Kingdom)

ooc: Meta, the reason why his economy is so relatively strong is because people have sudden need of oil again. I didn't really mention that in the starting page, but the starting economy for the two Middle Eastern nations were much better. Still, that is a lot of upgrading. Anyway, Sheep has a nice little flashpoint in Isreal to deal with.

London, UK- In Parliament
Make MPs took the floor today to denounce the oppressive regime of Continental Europe, now the Spanish Empire. The British parliament also voted to increase naval expenditures along with social programs to increase living standards.
Tel Aviv, Islamic Kingdom:
The situation has become more and more unusual over the past few weeks. The Cairo government has announced a Constitution, thus taking away much of the Arab anti-monarchist support. Still, many Jews are outraged by the large military spending increase, which they see as there to threaten them into submission. Several government facilities have been hit by Jewish militants, and the leadership is becoming more bold by the day. Today, a small gunship of the navy was bombed and sunk at port, and the Islamic military barely stopped a plot to hit a military barracks. Several Isreali suspects have been detained by the government in connection to the attacks.
Siberia, Russia- With the 1st Cavalry:
Several border clashes with Martian forces have occured in recent days, leading the russian military to be increasingly on edge. Martian forces are not estimated to be strong enough to mount a significant attack, but we remind viewers that they were never seen as a threat before their nuclear strike.
Oslo, Martian Territory- With the Royal Marines:
The largest scale military operation post-martian invasion saw a coordinated aerial and amphibious assualt by British forces upon Martian positions in Oslo. Martian troops, outnumbered and outgunned, retreated into the mountains. Scandinavia was attacked by the British government as a target of opportunity; sandwiched between the 3 democratic nations of Europe, it is largely seen by military planners as a strategically untenable position for the Martians.

HRE Military Commando - Wien - Austria
General Eugene of Savoy watched at the reports from the British and the Russian fronts, both were bringing good news, the Martians were finally taking the beating, but who knows what any other trick they could do to the earthlings.
He than walked out of his office and met with the other high ranking Generals in the command room, to prepare the strategies for the attack against Martian positions in Scandinavia and Siberia, and to plan the defenses of the HRE itself.
"Sir, we need to strike hard on Siberia, that is the Martian stronghold on Earth, and if we manage to capture that, the other territories would free themselves as well" said Gen Franz Joseph
"Probably, but we should not forget that the Martians have a base on Scandinavia, if they see us too weak on that border they would not think twice and attack us" replied Gen Garibaldi
"I think we should concentrate on Scandinavia first, the Martians are weak on that front, and we need to finish them off, and later concentrate our forces on Siberia, hopefully our space program shall be over by them" declared Gen Eugene
The other two Generals agreed with him.

Military Operations:
The Special Forces are to try to sneak into Sweden, and take out as many AA Artillery and Martian Radars as possible, once this is done the following will happen:
Send a strong fleet into the Baltic Sea, from there a very little army force will land into Finland, and with air cover from the bases in northern Poland, they will invade Finland, their goal is to capture the city of Turku.
However this little strike is just a diversive for the big strike that another very large force will do into Sweden, the Army is to take Stockholm from one side, and Goteborg from the other, while the Navy is to give the troops support and the Air Force is to give them air cover.
Meanwhile the Belgrade and the Prag Armored Divisions are sent into Russia to help them on anything they may need.
