Unicef:
quote: The removal of the Taliban from power and the subsequent rise of a transitional government in Afghanistan have renewed hopes that after more than 20 years of violence and oppression, children and families can look forward to healthier and happier lives. |
quote: In June 2002, the first popular elections held in Afghanistan in over two decades gave power to Hamid Karzai, who now leads a transitional administration that will preside for 18 months as the country works to rebuild and recover from decades of oppression and destruction. |

quote: Despite signs of progress over the last year, UNICEF today said Afghanistan is still grappling to rebuild its nation - with girls and women in particular jeopardy - and now the country is at risk of being ignored. |
United Nations:
http://www.reliefweb.int/w/rwb.nsf/...5c?OpenDocument
quote: The report notes progress made on the consolidation of government authority by the Afghan Transitional Administration, in particular through the adoption of a national development budget, the successful completion of a currency reform operation, and the ongoing implementation of national programmes to provide clear, tangible economic benefits to the Afghan population. |
again, it's not paradise, but it's improving and getting better.
But if you disagree, say it clear: "The situation under the Taleban was better"
If that's not what you mean, and if you agree that it's better right now, but still not the best place to live, than just say "I agree with you CS"
But if you're in the surreal impression that it's possible to turn hell into heaven in little time, I'm sorry. Welcome to the planet earth.

Yes, I forgot - with us or against us. I don't agree with you, so I must be some sort of evil stinking terrorist that supports dictators and eats babies.
I have repeatedly said that the new government is better, and that is good, but the improvements are minimal. I think that it is only in the cities that you see any change - women are allowed to go out on the streets, and you can buy all the western merchandise you want. Outside of the cities, I doubt it really matters to the people who is in charge.
In a sense, the USA was lucky that the Taliban was such a horrible regime so that they could gain support. Looking at their Saudi allies, they clearly have no problem with these sorts of fanatic and oppresive regimes, as long as they do what the USA says.
I don't expect Afghanistan to have improved over night, not with the decades of war it has seen (especially having been a playground for the soviets and americans during the cold war). But the USA has not made any serious effort in improving the situation, they merely joined in on the ongoing war and blew things up untill they got what they wanted, and let things carry on as they have for the past few decades. Afghanistan still does not have the money or resources it needs, even with international support, while the USA continues to spend trillions of dollars in it's warmongering.
As for those quotes, they're mostly just the usual "good times ahead!" beurocrat talk. (and, i might add, have nothing to do with the USA) I certainly don't remember there ever being elections, just a president appearing out of nowhere - but maybe I am wrong on that, though.
Eitherway, you don't get much news on afhanistan now that the USA has shot it's load. I'll admit to being as ignorant about it as anyone else - but I have made an effort to find out how it has changed and all i found was stories on how it is short of money, political parties are being arrested, people being beaten, the fighting between warlords, ect...

I can understand Rwanda, as the region has no support bases, and the U.S. would suffer very large casualties and would probably lose a war there. But maybe with worldwide support they could do it.

The US lobbied other UN members to pull out of Rwanda. What happened there was as much the fault of the US, if not more, than the UN.
The UN was doing something about Iraq, but the US just wanted an invasion.
