Re: Menace of "Superman".
In the past year since his appearence in Metropolis the entity known by the media as "Superman" has saved a space shuttle, thwarted numerous schemes by Bald Corporate Bastards, and generally stopped small scale crime throughout Metropolis, bizarrely criminals still flock to the city.
Dispite these events, there is much we do not know of "Superman", other than that he is an extraterristrial from the planet "Kyrpton", a claim NASA, the Sagan Institute, and the Randi Foundation find dubious. He appears to be immune to all manner of American small-arms weaponry, as well as prototype weapons from the LexLuthorCorp. Flight, superspeed, "Heat Vision", "Ice Breath", and superhuman strength is just the tip of the iceberg.
"Superman" has declined to be examined by several dozen promient institutions, from Texas A&M to S.T.A.R. Labs. To this day we do not know what his limits are, but backup plans must be made.
National Command Authority has ordered devolpement of a 'black' project that would disable and/or kill "Superman". America is very vulnerable to this menace, and as yet his true intentions are unknown, even more worrisome, there is a high likelyhood that if "Superman" man is indeed a E.T., then there could be others like him. A solution must be found as soon as practical.
You are hereby authorized an amount of (Ludricous sum) to devolp a way to kill Superman as a contingency plan to our national security. America's fate, if not the world's, may rest on you.
--------------
Rules of engagement:
1. Post-Crisis, so no kryptonite! It is too rare to be of use.
2. No magic. The Federal guv'ment does not believe in such jibber-jabber.
3. Limit civilian casualties. This means the nuclear option must be weighed very carefully.
You, the worlds Brightest (I always laugh when Apolyton is refered to like that) must come up with a plan. I'm confident you'll be able to do it.

Red Sunlight, and since this is post-crisis, no. It use to be that "red sunlight" would instantly begin to affect him, no it's merely lack of "yellow sun" which goes away much slower.
HOWEVER, if he is away from any sunlight for an extended period of time (several days, weeks) he would get week.
The trick, of course, is preventing the sun from hitting him. If you can capture him without blocking the sun from him, you probaly don't need to pull that stuff.
Likewise, if you block the sun from earth for any amount of extended time, you can expect civilian casualties to start to rise.

Kill Superman, or render him incapable of harm?
What about sending him far away from Earth, under sedation?
Ask him to participate in some scientfiic experiments for the good of mankind, so that we might better understand his powers.
Lock him deep within a massive government bunker in order to 'test' his powers, by placing a lead blindfold over his eyes.
Set a deadman's switch for Superman's hand, that if he releases the switch, it will trigger a switch that will kill Superman's adoptive parents by dropping them in a vat of acid.
Set a second switch, so that if the first lock on the door is broken, Superman's adoptive parents will again be dropped in acid.
Line all the walls with lead, having a monitor available, showing Superman's parents, and the acid. This way Superman does not know how to rescue his parents, but is aware of the price for not co-operating with the tests. Turn the monitor off, so that if Superman gets uncooperative, you can tell him not to stop pressing the switch.
Since you are at the bottom of a large bunker, change the light to match that of a Red Giant star, with respect to the spectral class. At this point, Superman should lose his powers.
While pressing Superman's hand down on the deadman's switch, lethally inject him with poison.
He dies, continue pressing the switch, leave the room through the lock, and release Superman's adoptive parents.

Ok,sun is the key. I think we should trick him somehow into a heart of a gas giant.
I think we should send an empty missile at jupiter, and say we're doing it for research. When the missile crashes on Jupiter, we'll inform the world that the supposed research missile has succefully arrived to Jupiter, and we'll describe the parameters of the hypothetica device onboard, that will have the criteria needed to cause a massive blast that would destroy Jupiter, and harm badly the solar system. We, of course wouldn't say it is dangerous, but anyone smart enough will be able to connect the dots. If Superman will understand the supposed danger, or some civilian will explain to him the hypothetical consequences, He'll fly straight to try and get the supposed device before it explodes. ( we'll make the announcement in an exactly appropriate time). I don't think he would be able to see anything under the surface of Jupiter ( there is an enormous amount of radiation there), so he'll plunge into jupiter trying to find it. He won't even notice as his power drains from:
a) being far away from the sun.
b) plunging into Jupiter and not getting any sunlight at all.

Sandman's and Obiwan's may be the best so far, although there would have to be a few modifications. (Superman can hold his breath for an extened period of time and may be able to get in time.)

So I have to work on the motivations, why would Superman submit to an analysis of his powers?
All we really need to do is lock him in the room, and turn on the red lights.
Release a bio-engineered plague into the population. Since Superman has a very fast brain, ask him to help with the researchers inside this government bunker.
You don't need the lead lined blindfolds, but you can line the bunker with lead, and make sure that while you are walking Superman down the bunker, you kidnap his adoptive parents, and trap them in another part of the lead lined bunker. This way Superman has no idea that his adoptive parents have been captured, and no idea where they are located within the bunker.
Walk him down to the lead lined room, while setting the lock to go off with tampering, or 1 incorrect password, or if the lock is smashed, superman's adoptive parents are dropped into a vat of acid.
Now, once the door is locked, you can turn on the red-lights, causing Superman to lose his powers. Then you can inject him with poison.
After Superman is dead, wait for the plague to wear off after a 96 hour period.

Kandor exists post-Crisis (although without the cork, I believe).
