A few observations....
Firstly- With all due respect to Aeson, I think checking the mountain at 4 from Bigfree is a good idea- first, because we're already most of the way there- finish the job. It'll give us a look into Persian territory which IS significant, since we know their second city is so poorly placed (HOW exactly do they plan on getting that city to GROW?) I also fail to understand how exactly that 1 warrior is going to prevent us from doing anything. If it stays next to us in the "3" position, we can always choose to go "2" or "6" and continue our scouting as we like. Bear in mind we're also forcing them to keep a unit tied to us even to attempt this limited and weak form of blocking, which is preventing them from scouting with it themselves. And since they're *already* in a position to do that very limited form of blocking, let's at least finish out scouting in the direction we're currently headed. South will still be open later- one warrior shadowing us (and wasting its own time) isn't going to change that. (For that matter, two can't change it, although it can slow us down drastically...but if they want to throw that much early resources into that cause....
Secondly- it looks more and more like the Persians have a chokehold on a bottleneck, which certainly explains their early desires to seal us out. We might consider expanding directly towards them in our mid/long-term goals; if we can force them to expand south even a little, that will certainly stress their relations with India. I think we've got a good chance to lay quite the "press" on Persia if we move fast.... which, again respectfully, I feel we have failed to do so far, erring in favor of extreme caution. "Take and hold" is definitely what Carthage does best- so let's grab up some ground towards Persia to hold, already. We may actually have the BEST land of the three of us in this area, as frightening as that seems- or at least better than Persia, although W4 could probably check Persian's Northwestern front to confirm the jungle extends there. Let's take advantage of that.
Thirdly- I haven't mentioned the worker before now, but it would be a good idea to lay down a road in the direction of the new city placement? (Which we also really ought to finalize now... and given how things are going, the production-intense city to the west seems wise, particularly since some of the mined squares are in the west and a city on that hill to our west would reach two of them.... and our roads already support a westward city...but again, that's just my opinion....) We really ought to open a new thread to discuss that settler, but the worked squares, road network, and defensive bonus of that hill (which would put our Nummies ahead of Immortals decisively on city defense) all put me strongly into the "West first" column.
::shrug:: Just some thoughts.

First, the decision for "extreme caution", that is, building an extra couple of Warriors, is a wise one, given that there are 5 or more Barbs running around and we still have some scouting to do. I would have gone along with only one Warrior after the Granary, but would have felt pretty stupid if some Barbs showed up to harass us.
Second, "take and hold" is all fine and good, but at this point in the game we cannot afford to waste our Settlers on poor city-sites. What is there in the direction of the Persians? Jungle. Remember that we're only on turn 28, and still have some good sites around our capital to consider.

Please check the relevant threads (everything is linked to in the Ministry of the Interior topped thread) for info about this. The points you raise have already been addressed: city1 will be 111 from Apolyton, to which there is already a road; city2 will be 232 from Apolyton, to which there is already a road.

I never respected Barbs either. Then two things changed my mind: 1) we can afford no "mistakes" here, meaning that this is not a SP or internet MP game where an unlucky Barb attack can be forgotten by simply starting another game, 2) we lost our first Warrior to a Barb up North, sort of a "wake-up call" that the RNG is not always the best of friends.
Please keep "Friedrich the Complaining" around; it keeps everyone on their toes and makes sure we double-check everything. bigfree1 used to fill this role, but has calmed down greatly since his name-change to BigFree.

If they move 4, it only delays our movement south. It is physically impossible for them to block one unit with another. If they want to waste their warrior's time trying to block us when they could be exploring instead, let them.
