Former UK foreign minister - Robin Cook - the war was badly planned! Support Apolyton

well where else but from Guardian... but well it is meant to come out in Sunday Mirror tomorrow.

quote:

Former foreign secretary Robin Cook today dramatically called on Tony Blair to bring Britain's troops home from Iraq.

Mr Cook - whose resignation as Leader of the Commons was the most high-profile political protest against UK involvement in the war - denounced the campaign in Iraq as "bloody and unjust".

And he warned that Britain and America risked stoking up a "long-term legacy of hatred" for the west across the Arab and Muslim world.

In an outspoken article for tomorrow's Sunday Mirror, Mr Cook said that the US president, George Bush, and his defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, did not appear to know what to do now that their hopes that Iraq would swiftly capitulate had proved unfounded.

They appeared to be contemplating laying siege to Baghdad, which would result in massive civilian suffering and many unnecessary deaths, he said.

Mr Cook wrote: "I have already had my fill of this bloody and unjust war.

"I want our troops home and I want them home before more of them are killed."

He attacked Mr Bush for "sitting pretty in the comfort of Camp David" while British and US forces risked death in an "unnecessary and badly planned" war.

"It is easy to show you are resolute when you are not one of the guys in a sandstorm peering around for snipers," he said.

"Nobody should start a war on the assumption that the enemy's army will co-operate. But that is exactly what President Bush has done.

"And now his marines have reached the outskirts of Baghdad, he does not seem to know what to do next."

He warned of the dangers of besieging the Iraqi capital: "Donald Rumsfeld has come up with a new tactic. Instead of going into Baghdad, we should sit down outside it until Saddam surrenders.

"There is no more brutal form of warfare than a siege. People go hungry. The water and power to provide the sinews of a city snap. Children die.

"There will be a long-term legacy of hatred for the west if the Iraqi people continue to suffer from the effects of the war we started."

Mr Cook raised concerns that the Iraq campaign could drag on for months.

"Shortly before I resigned, a cabinet colleague told me not to worry about the political fallout - the war would be finished long before polling day for the May local elections," he said.

"I just hope those who expected a quick victory are proved right."

He commended the decision to bring back the bodies of slain troops to be buried in Britain.

But he added: "I can't help asking myself if there was not a better way to show consideration for their families.

"A better way could have been not to start a war that was never necessary and is turning out to be badly planned."

Well what a comment:

"Nobody should start a war on the assumption that the enemy's army will co-operate. But that is exactly what President Bush has done.

Can this be true

and the link http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Stor...,925806,00.html

Well all in all this is the most senior figure from the ranks of the "willing" that resigned and in now giving some comments on the whole affair from his point of view.

I'm sure that the foreign minister of the UK was involved in great detail at the highest levels of military planning for this war.

And yes, pulling out after a few days and giving Saddam a victory over the "coalition of the gutless" will make the Islamic world love us all even more.

Seems like Blair losing the services of this weenie isn't that big of a tragedy.

He's been gone for ages. He was shuffled out of the Foreign Office two years ago.

I see this as an attempt to recapture political weight.

I think two years... but he was the chairman of the party... or some similar function until he resigned now...

anyway, he should know more than you or me, he is just not singing and dancing as Dubya says as most of the others...

The US 4th Infantry Division isn't even engaged yet. (They just left for Kuwait). They're got all the heaviest stuff and the best equipment.

I think the plan was to race to isolate everything outside of Bagdad and encircle it and then wait for the heavy stuff to arrive. Seems like it's going according to plans.

Oh, and Zylka is on the money.

Well for the Brits the good deadline must be before May... and these were surely the hopes... and for US... well frankly I don't think they care much... as long as Saddam is gone be it 1 month or a year US will be happy.

Will the battle of Bagdad be like Leningrad or will it be like Stalingrad? Preferably like Paris, but that is not very likely.

Well at least that was to be expected as they are long-term Saddams enemies that are anyway running their part of the country on their own... I guess they have to attack to get some favours from the future victors (as Turkey -US ally is their major threat) but the same was meant to happen on the South... but it didn't.

This is not really news for me... This is a highly ranked politician giving his view on the war - one of the rare people who dared to give up his political life for his beliefs.
