Favorite Epic films Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

So, why not have a thread about Epics?

Now, I leave it to people to make thier own judgement about what is Epic and what isn't. Also, any genre of film is available.

I really like The Last Emperor: the acting is good, it is geenrally accurate, and in general able to very efefctively and movingly tell the story of this one man and all the changes he lived through and on the way telling the sory of the first 60 years of China's 20th century hisotry.

Oerdin, first time I totally agree with your opinion

Another epic that I find fascinating in spite of it's message is also about the "galant" South, Birth Of A Nation.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

All my favourite really long films (Barry Lyndon, Vertigo, Tarkovsky's Solaris) are not distinctly epic in nature. I'm having a hard time thinking of a massive-scale, well-arched film I really like, which is curious since I'm quite focused on artistic vision, set design, cinematography, etc. that should all work equally well in an epic setting.

What is interesting, is that he wanted to talk about what really happened in there, but he did leave tapes about it (interview) behind, when he died. (Needless to say, that his version is slightly different than that the movie told.. )

Boris, it's not THAT boring... It's 10 times more exciting than Gosford Park, for example!
I consider Spirited Away to be rather epic, of a sorts.

Here's anotherexcellent and recent epic:
Atanjuarat (The Fast Runner)

I found that Barry Lyndon does play like an Epic, at least for the first half. I would say that both solaris and 2001 classify as space Epics: films that try to cover huge ground.

I don't know if the new Last of the Mohicans counts as an epic or not. Gangs of NY certainly tries to be one, but I didn't like it.

The Godfather is certainly an Epic, and a good one.

I also liked Spartacus, and recently Gladiator or LOTR. Braveheart was good too, but The Patriot was boring.

I do not really care about accuracy, as long as the movie is generally good. For historical details I wouldn´t visit a cinema...

BTW, do they really make a movie about Alex the Great with diCaprio???

Ok thanks, let´s hope it is a great movie....

I also liked the movie about Jeanned´Arc by Luc Besson (sp?). I think it wasn´t a big success, but I think it was good.

Edit: and "The Name of the Rose" was great too (and yes, I know the book is better )
