Apolytoners Who Use SETI@Home Full PM-box? Change here!

Hi all!

I've noticed that Apolyton's SETI@Home page ( http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/...p&name=Apolyton ) is in dire need of attention.

If you choose to link your name with your Apolyton member page, the SETI site automatically places the "http://" in your link. So I've noticed that ALOT of Apolytoners have their link pointing to: "http://http://..." this just confuses the computer and gives you a blank page.

So, If you're a member of the Apolyton SETI Group and have your homepage linked to Apolyton - Visit Seti@home and change your homepage link (ie, don't put in the "http://" when you update your profile - SETI will do it for you).

Thank you for your attention concerning this matter.

By the way Asher - What does Folding@Home have to do with the search for alien lifeforms?

Suffering from ads?

It doesn't.

From F@H's website:
quote:
Our goal: to understand protein folding, protein aggregation, and related diseases

What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

As you can see, I decided to retire at 1500 packets. Is there an Apolyton group for Folding@Home? Maybe I'll join, although I don't get much done in the summer. I don't leave the comp on 24hrs due to thunderstorm activity ("summer" seems to follow winter very closely here with little spring in between).

Rasbelin: Mexicans?? What on earth are you talking about? I myself am American Indian (Wyandot - from the Great Lakes region), Scottish, and German ... or in another words, your average American.

Straybow: I guess if I lived in a region that got a lot of thunderstorm activity, I would most likely also turn my computer off when I wasn't using it...but since I don't - I don't.

I'm damn curious. as to why is Folding@Home or others more important?

1. For those, raw comp power isn't the only thing needed, while for SETI it is.

2. The possible result of SETI is FAR better than any possible result from Folding.

Is this a joke?

SETI looks at a very minute area and hopelessly tries to look for signals in the sky. Hasn't SETI been re-crunching the same packets several times over now to double-check they didn't find anything, btw?

Even if we do find someone, there's nothing we can do about it. It'd be way too far away, it'd be useless, we wouldn't know how to communicate with them, etc.

Whereas Folding@Home is providing real, tactical research and simulations for protein folding which is critical in understanding the cause of, and cure of, many diseases that people suffer and die from.

So tell me again why you think SETI is more important?

Suffering from ads?

Because discovering aliens (who ARE there) is much more important than understanding causes of diseased, as heartless as this might sound. Heck, it would be the biggest thing ever for all of the human civilization. Not to mention they might well have the cancer cure...

Besides, folding research can be done without a distributed supercomputer. SETI can be not.

I concur, SETI can hopefully lead to the age-old question: "Are We Alone?" It really doesn't matter if we can do anything right now with that knowledge, but it will point us in the right direction concerning space exporation.

Pah. I do not have ANY doubt AT ALL that we're not alone. I am just as sure about it as I am about my own existence. Many people are, though, of course not feeling the same way.

This is why an open contact with extraterrestrials, or a transmission received from them, would be the most important thing yet.

I think the SETI is far more important if it succeeds. If it finds nothing, then its all been a big waste of processing power. I think the payoff from what Asher has mentioned is tangible and known to be acheivable. As such its a safe bet.
