Have you seen this movie?

I don't know, somehow it touched my somewhere deep, I don't know where and why but it did. It left me sad. Usually I like movies that moves me, sad, happy, what ever.. but this time I hope I didn't see this for some reason. It has few powerfull scenes though.

And I like Edward Norton generally.. I recommend this to anyone who likes Norton. It's basically a story about a guy in New York, drug dealer who gets busted and the movie is about the last day he spends free. He is with is friends and gf and father.

It has good scenes like where he tells his best friend (one of the two) to mangle his face, so he wouldn't be so pretty when he goes to jail in couple of hours, so he would survive there. But best friends don't want to bash others face in, but eventually they will because it's the others last request and because its for his own survival and good. Basically this guy is a scumbag drug dealer, but you can see his human side, and that he is very scared of going to prison. It's so painfull to him, and when he deserves to go to prison, you kind of wish he didn't have to and that he could just clean his act.

Then there is other powerful scene where father picks him up and drives him to jail. He says that he can take him to somewhere, so he can flee and not go to jail. This would mean lots of problems to his father from authority, he'd lose pretty much all he has. Maybe even get in trouble with those other criminals.. but he's ready to do it, to save his son. But if that happens, they can never meet, never write, never return. Then it has a scene where they are in bar , having last drink. No words are changed. Both knowning this is it. Then they briefly hug, father goes into the car and drives away, never looking back, no words. I don't know, it has some power in it that at least made me choke, and I'm not the type of person to choke on anything. Least in the movies.

What are your thoughts?

Yeah, I really like Norton's work. Right now I can't remember any bad work of his.
It's still a hollywood movie, and other than this it was pretty normal stuff. But those two scenes made the difference for me, getting all emotional. I don't know if it's powerful to others who goes to see it, but it was personally strong to me.

But hey.. imdb.com has 7.7 ratings, so it can't be THAT bad overall I guess..

It's not hollywood - It's Spike Lee. It is also some of the best modern filmmaking going on nowadays. It features one of my favorite shots of the year. I HIGHLY reccomend it.

My friends dragged me to see this movie. I didn't really care for it, the movie didn't really make me feel sympathetic for Norton's character. The whole movie didn't really have a plot; it was more of just a character analysis. Some of my more artsy friends liked it though, so I guess you could check it out if you are into that kind of stuff.

We generally tend to associate hollywood with any american movie. Logical since 95% of them are hollywwod but not correct of course.

hollywood stands for unoriginal, 2 hour pop corn w@nkery something that isn't the case for such movies as My Own Idaho, The Believer etc

Speaking outside that I never got around to seeing neither Amelie nor The man without a past

Well, Memento is a good example of the currently thriving indie scene in America today. There are quite a few indie films that have gotten some success. "Hollywood" actors like to act in them because it increases their cred, resume and they're fun to do. Plus they can be the starting gate for guture stars.
By the way, I predict that 2003 will be agreat year for movies.

paiktis, that's what I mean.. foreigners think American film with bigger budget than $50 000 is Hollywood.. plus with known actors.. thought it might not be the case (being real hollywood movie).

I was telling about these two scenes only, so I wanted to make clear the movie is not about these two scenes and there's more to it, that I personally didn't find so strong, and that they are only part of the whole movie. And by saying that I wanted to make sure, that no one is expecting super art movie with weird colours and dialogue. And by this I don't mean to say smaller budget indie movies are always very much like weird art movies, or that art movies are bad.. I just wanted to make sure no one goes to see it and expects that, and then get disappointed.

rather sad, considering it still makes the best movies in the world.

A big to Edward Norton. he rarely associates himself with crappy movies, so he has become sort of a quality flag for a movie.

Everyone one liked "Fight Club", and "America X", right?

Pekka, I understand what you say.

BTW it happens; to have certain scenes stick to your memory filter and making quite an impression particularly to you and not so much to most others.
For some reason.

Azazel, it depends on how you define "best". There're plenty of things hollywood can never fulfill. And in some times it might be just ok for then and there.

Yeah, they both were very good. Also Norton does awesome work in movie where he's young catholic(?) boy accused of murder. I don't want to give any spoilers if someone hasn't seen it, because it's awesome movie.

Well, Hollywood makes the best movies is matter of taste, but I think they are in general though (best that is). But then people tend to devide Hollywood movies into typical Hollywood movies and then not so typical Hollywood movies where they mean that typical Hollywood movie is done with huge budget, plot what you can figure out in the first 5 minutes, few 'surprises' you can see coming from miles away, lots of explosions and happy ending.. if you know what I mean. Good example is all those disaster movies. But then again it can be used as a compliment being typical Hollywood, meaning it's done with no expenses saved, looking good and being good entertainment that doesn't have to have any deep things in it. And not so typical Hollywood movie is usually compliment, meaning that it really is Hollywood movie, but it doesn't have massive explosions and special effects, but master acting and great script that makes you think and you leave the theatre silent.

Yep it is as Pekka said more or less here.

Although the really stupid hollywood films (and they are many) we call them "Amerikanies" which means something like the "american ones/ american 'style/production/mindset'" with a bit of slang in it.

They concistently get 0 out of 10. (think Armagedon)

Which don't go for all movies american made movies of course. far from it.

paiktis, we have that term too . Usually means constant flag waving and super patriotic stuff, cheesy and they are often very unrealistic too, in a way movie plots shouldn't be. You know the types where people starts yelling 'USA USA USA' and the one they're yelling at gets super powers and beats everyone and world is saved once again .

A name of the movie is not considered a spoiler.

Also, compliments to Bruce Willis, and Brad Pitt, that have also proven to be top notch actors. 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, the Sixth Sense...

And that Norton movie I recommend is called Primal Fear. It has Richard Gere in it, but don't be afraid, the movie is good and Norton is just awesome in it.

One of Nortons strong points is that he really really can adapt to different roles and be very different. Even his physique is different. In American History X he's very buffed up and muscular, and he does look scary. In Fight Club he is smaller (filmed after X movie), but still has good body, but is not that buffed up, and it's better for his role. Then again he can be like young boy with his body and acting. So I'd say he's very physical with his acting too, he can adapt like those weird jungle animals.

No, I don't mean special effects. How much special effects did 'America X' have?

cheesy American Movies: One black, and one white dude save the day, from Aliens, presumably.
cheesy French movies: bore the crap out of me. People that have lots of issues talk a lot about sex.
German movies: same people, but they talk less, If you know what I mean.
Indian movies: I really can't figure out what's going on there.
Russian movies: Drunk policemen fight crime.
