Shakira still has a lot of talent, but she definitely slid on Laundry Service. I don't know if it's the cross to trying to do things in English, or her current production/management people, but if you compare Laundry Service to her previous two studio albums, Donde Estan Los Ladrones and Pies Descalsos, the two earlier once have a lot more going on in every way, and are still fun. Donde Estan Los Ladrones just rocks from beginning to end.

Shakira just hurts her own act by trying to be everything at the same time. Not that it's my kind of music anyhow but I can't argue against that she's one of the most charismatic women that have entered the mainstream scene in quite a while. Just look in her eyes and compare it with those young pop tarts like Avril, Britney, Christina Aguilera. One could drown in the depth of them. Sure, it's just an illusion that tells very little about the persons but selling mainstream music is about selling illusions. Compared to how Avril tries to sell her illusion in the quotes in this thread Shakira's a rocket science.

HOLD UP. Unlike many teenie boppers, whom I love to hate, Christina can sing. Her record label might like for her to forward a particular image but the voice is her's and it's a damn good one. Christina definently sings better than Britney, Shakira, Mandy Moore and the rest of them. She's especially good on Mi Reflejo and My Kind of Christmas.

We can agree on how hot Jennifers are, we can agree on how horrible the situation in Sudan is, but we are at odds on Shakira. I'll accept however that there is no accounting for taste, and that we must simply have different notions of a good singer. Also, I'd have to admit that Shakira's appeal is more in the older stuff than in Laundry Service, and her voice is more singer/songwriter-ish than most pop divas.

So what? A good voice doesn't make a good artist.

Then again I mostly listen to punk and other forms of music where a good voice in many cases might be more of a disadvantage than an advantage.
