you can move over terrain as well as fight in that mode. (or if you have no clue as to what you're doing, you can let the AI take over and you can watch a rather corny fight scene with motion pictures and closeups )

Complete shot in the dark. Blake Stone? (AFAIK, it's an FPS released around that time. No clue about its plot, though.)

We've got a winner

I was introduced to it by one of my college friends when he played it with his ROTC buddies, and found it pretty cool, being RT part of the time (well all the time outside of the various game pauses for and the individual combat). He actually played the pencil and paper RPG and had to get it when it came out for the computer.

btw, he's also the one who introduced me to Civ I the year before

Another clue, another riddle:

It's not so much the city that I mind
But the view that made it one of a kind...
Neither the fact that I can fight
But more to do with my line of sight...

As I said it's an 80's game. What game am i?

The game came initially was released for 8-bit homecomputers. It got high ratings at the time. Later on 16-bit versions were also released.

Ok i've set myself up for a big enough fall [edit: i'm only 70% sure so i'll wait for confirmation]
It's Mercenry by Novogen(programmed by Paul Woakes/Oakes?). I played this and the sequal 'The Second City' to death on my 8 bit Atari.
That was a tuff one CapTVK

That is correct Thor!

It's indeed Paul Woakes Mercenary by Novagen. in Mercenary your ship crashlands on Targ and you have to escape by gathering enough money to buy a ship that will take you off into space. You earn money by delivering items to specific parties. The city has been turned into a war zone and you need to find out which side pays the best. (You can even kidnap a commander and sell him to the other side!)

Mercenary is special because it's one the first 3D games. It's all in wireframes but the sense of being there was amazing at the time. How he managed to put an entire city in 64k still manages to amaze me.

You can find a remake of Mercenary here:

Btw Thor, did you manage to finish Mercenary and Mercenary: the 2nd city? I had some hints from gaming magazines at the time but even then it was tough to finish.

Cool! Thank god its over!
Nice link - if i find the time i might relive my 8bit days
And yes i did finish them - i even drew up detailed maps and guides for both of them and sent them into 'Atari User' magazine(don't think they got published though )

Ok a nice easy one

Platform: 8bit and later nearly every platform i think?

Date: not sure mid 80's - 90's for last conversions.

Clue:

Flap flap flap get the egg
jump hop damn! too late to beg
You just got lanced.

Correct SCG!
Joust was one of my fav two player games at that time, it was a simple yet addictive game. 1 or 2 players competed for the 'eggs' on one screen with various platforms to jump from and bump into. If you left the eggs too long they would hatch into enemy 'jousters' and it made things much more difficult. The gravity+ inertia effect was great - it really was a skill to manouvere yourself ontop of enemy jousters(which included player 2) to knock them out the game.

Was it released on various 8-bit homecomputers (C64, spectrum) or only the AppleII?
