I prefer the river grassland for that extra science (and food). The forest and whale only give you three beakers. But I'll settle in a pinch.

Yeah, but I remember back in civI you could steal the sea based specials by putting a ship on them. Think of some of the sea battles that would cause.

My points is that once it turns size 2 you can turn out setts every 5 turns when build on a shielded grass and working both the whale and forrest.
When build on a normal grass this turns to 7 turns and you have to keep moving the worker in order to not waste shields.

I dont give a rats ass about rivers in 2x production, usualy you end up placing city's where you dont want them in order to maintain a good infrastructure, a rivermouth with the shielded grass+ whale or forrest and fih are nice though.

A forest/whale combo is only three in 'despotism' in 2x prod. And you're right, in 2x production rivers are no where near as important. While not critical, the extra defense, trade and mobility are a "nice" to have, but the lack of them doesn't stop me from settling.

And yes, on our tiny rocks, river forests rock. Of course most of my non forested river squares are forests before the sessions are done.
