	MP ettiquette: Or things that tic you off. Tired of ads?

We need a thread to discuss MP ettiquette, so here it is.

My fist complaint is the icq authorization. I get a request and in the message area it says CIV MP, so of course I authorize without giving it much thought and it gets added to my contact list. Then I look at my contact list and no NICKNAME is provided and all there is, is a stinking number. WHAT THE F*** IS THAT. How hard would it be to add a nickname. I know people like the anonymous nature of on-line, but If you expect me to commit to hours and hours of playing time, the least you can do is type in RED RAT in the nickname.

I can see it now,
WAR4, "So who's our fourth tonight"
RAH "not sure, i think it's 234525312 or his brother 340298345"
WAR4, "I think he sucks, but I may be confused him with 894738234"

Come on folks, have a little decency. I am going to delete all number only icq contacts tonight.

well, even worse than no nickname, is all the requests i get, then never get an icq to ACTUALLY play

then i go and delete them.....then two weeks later i get the request again...and its cyclical

almost as if they can tell i deleted them

FF has been busy. I doubt it had anything to do with a feeling of fear or adaquacy, since he always fully admitted his lack of championship skills.

When we used to play team games, I hated it when one opponent team member would send a king chat when his partner was moving troops up on you in hopes that you wouldn't notice it or be able to react fast enough.

slow play though is the real pet peeve, you dont' notice it in three player games but in four players games..sigh........

the lag the other night was rough, seems to happen when you and ming lock up

Regarding the first post with the icq numbers I think it often starts out this way (since the program must use the numbers not the nicks), and the name gets resolved later when there is interaction between the 2 members. I don't think you can have just a number. Whack any numbers you have into search.......I bet a nick would come up, and if you talked to the number the same nick would be resolved.

Also the 'nick' you see is just a 'cover', since the program uses the unique numbers (not the non-unique nicks - that would be chaos) for everything. Therefore you can easily change 12363276 to Red Rat with no problem anyway.

Hope that helps solve your gripe.

Nope. Some resolve, others don't. And I'll usually get the request when I'm not on line, so when I do finally authorize it they're not on line to ask.

Have you seen it not resolve when you actually talk to the person? Of course it may not if you accept the request and they have not msg'd you after.......but as I said I think it will resolve if given a proper chance. And it being a number probably only bothers you if you are going to play with a person, which be definition means you will both be online and the name will soon resolve if I am right.

And the second point I made must help you anyway.............just rename the number to whatever you like. Just right-click then 'rename' then think of a name. I often do this, so I may have missed some times where the name chosen by the person did not replace the number.

Yep, I've talked to numbers that didn't resolve. I have about a dozen, just numbers. If I talk to them, I'll ask for a nick and change it. But I've had a few still not provide one. Needless to say, I refuse to play with those people.

Average I'd say..........my gf, some uni friends, some old schoolfriends, and some gamers, comprising of civvers, Quake and Warcraft players.

I often manually rename them anyway, so maybe I don't see the problem occur. When I don't the name is always resolved when I talk to the person.

Also I don't add random people, or let random people appear on my list. Since I always add people for a reason this means I will interact with them at some point, which again makes it more unlikely that the problem would affect me.

Whenever I get a request these days... I usually decline unless they say CIV II MP. And whenever I get those silly numbers, I just decline and ask, who the hell are you and why should I care

I used to say no to authorization to just numbers, but as Spike said, they sometimes associate afterwards. A couple of times i've declined and said, supply a name instead of just a number only to get back a response from one of the ole timers saying they got a new icq number and were redoing the authorization. Doh!

So now I just accept and if no name is forthcoming, eventually delete them. But it is discouraging because you have to assume that the only reason they asked was that they were interested in playing but never did. There aren't enough of us left to be further discouraging new or old blood.
