Ned, there's IMHO nothing inherently "wrong" with American patriotism by itself, if that's the question.
It's "good", relatively speaking, alright....

But people can and should be free to object to such things as the "Freedom fries" issue, or the flag over Saddam's statue without being seen as "bad", or "unpatriotic" by some.

If that is not acceptable (and according to some people, it isn't....), then patriotism can be "stupid" indeed....or rather, those people that exaggerate their patriotism in such a manner tend to fit the stereotype of "stupid patriotic Americans".

Senor, I beleive the CIA has admitted that some of its paid agents participated in attrocities. They eventually were terminated as agents. This had a lot to do with preventing the CIA from employing "unsavory" types as agents after the Church committee report came out.

Yes, Nixon did try to prevent Allende from coming to power in 1970 through a coup. But by 1973, it had long abandoned the idea of a coup, and continue to fund/orchastrate anti-Allende propaganda.
