	The US should switch to metric Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Why is my country so stubborn when it comes to switching to the metric system? I laugh everytime a person has to use a calculator to convert pounds to ounces or feet to miles; if it was metric one would only have to divide or multiply by powers of 10. I am sick of having to convert degrees F to degrees C when I read scientific things.

Oh yeah, a system wherein you have quarter-inches, inches, feet (12 inches), yards (3 feet), and miles (5,280 feet) makes sooooooo much more sense than a base-10 system! Who needs simplicity?

I like both for different things.

I find feet/pounds/inches better for every-day things like describing people, and I like metric when I'm actually doing academic stuff...

We've had metric for more than 20 years but I still roughly convert some things like weight, distance and area.

That's because my main beef with metric is that some of the standard units are too small or large. For example a mile is a good distance whereas a kilometre seems a bit short. Conversely an acre is an area you can visualise but a hectare is too large.

Actually, we're just doing what's best for the world. I mean, think about it: It will be far easier to switch the whole world to our system than drag our notoriously obstinate population kicking and screaming into metric use.

So, I say just do things the easy way.

Yeah... I love how the world complains when we try to tell them how to do things, but they turn around and try to tell us to change our measuring system

Either system is fine by me... I just wish I didn't need two different size of tool sets to deal with products made here and products made abroad

-Hmm... don't have a calculator, but a foot is (12 * .00254) m, so cube that multiply by 3, then multiply by 1000 to get the weight in kg, then multiply by (1000/454). That should give you a pretty good estimate. (and yes this is the extent of what I can do without looking anything up)

I actually agree with Horsie on this one.

It's easier to describe a person's height in feet and inches rather than meters or centimeters.

Likewise for weight in pounds rather than kilograms.

Metric is easier for academia, but much of the measurements are a pain in the ass in the real world.

I don't have a problem with kilometers though...
