Helsinky: Probably too late since Helsinky may have produced coastal fortress. At the beginning of the war it has no coastal defense so 4 vet cruisers can take out all defenders.

Hammerfest: not a strategic target. It is better just fortify units on tough terrian and let the enemy waste their units attacking them.

I prefer the idea of drawing the U-boats out with a bomber stack, next spring.

I'm concerned that Hammerfest may not fall so easily to 3 RG units. I'm not sure we have the time or the firepower to capture the city so easily. Others might know that the city is lightly defended from previous games, but I have no such knowledge, so it seems like a longshot.

Lets just say my spies tell me it is usually lightly defended.

This has been dicussed at lenght in the Murmansk thread.

The benefits greatly outweight the costs.

This could pay big dividends in getting our convoys to Soviet soil safely.

Although we should also do what the old guy suggested

Three Red Guards, even at 50/50 chance of taking the city, should be attempted. Those convoys will give many rubles to the war effort, and later good defensive armored infantry will take the same root.

That said, it seems as though the bomber/cruiser stack would be based out of the UK. No reason we cannot do this simulteneaously if people believe it is not a cheat.

I'll go along with the rest of the recommendations, since there is so much support for the attack.

But remember comrades... the people will not look kindly on a general whose winter offesnive lasts into the spring, leaving good Soviet soldiers exposed to the Stukas.

I didn't say I was going to hold them during spring and summer, but the attack will *probably* interrup German plans in the summer for convoy-bashing.

Exactly! This plan will succeed if attacks against convoys are disrupted. IF we Hold Hammerfest that will be a bonus but right now the goal is German attack on convoy disruption.

Glory in battle is fine, capturing and holding cities is fine.

But remember one thing Comrades in War the Amatuers talk about Strategy and the Experts talk Logistics. Because without Logistics there IS NO WAR MAKING ABILITY!

Thats what these convoys are all about enhancing our logistics capability.

You know what you are doing YOP. Just make sure you stay at least one hex away from those ships!

No banana option AND asking if Murmansk is part of the Rodina? Comrade Yopov, are you sure you haven't got an attack of insanity? We know you as a very good commander, but this is no excuse for talking like this! An apology should be made to the brave citizens of Russia and Murmansk in particular!

For all other people here, our brave soldiers will voluntarily die for the Rodina, IF this is necesaary! We will do our best to save them, but the country and the Party come first! Let there be no doubt about that.

Attack Hammerfest if you want, I'll be waiting to see what happens when summer comes around. I think it doesn't serve any benefit whatsoever and Hammerfest will be nondefendable in the summer when the germans regain their strength. Yes, you may gain money, and sure it is better than inactivity, so I guess go for it, but if it fails don't be surprised

Damn! I knew they missed something in the People's Officer Training Corps teaching curriculum! Uh-oh, hope I don't get purged for that....

yeah, I undersand, but will it really draw off german units? It won't draw units from the main fronts in Mother Russia and although it may help convoys nearing murmansk, it will do little to relieve those farther out in the atlantic.

Thats the hope, even if all the Red Guards get strafed and destroyed in one turn. That effectily takes them out of attacking convoys for the that turn and the next turn because they will return to base to heal.

Since we lost our first TWO convoys (2 trade units and 2 armored cars total) if we take the pressure off for two turns that would be a great help.

Plus That Devil Hitler will have a $hit fit if we actually capture Hammerfest! Now isn't that a delightfull thought!

Plus, if we get the battle for hammerfest going for some time, the city might disappear, leaving the Germans with no close airbase! This would benefit the Murmansk front greatly! We need the money these convoys bring us, plus the extra military units (we could use these to attack Finnland AND reinforce Leningrad and the surrounding cities.

We should at least try it!

For some reason AI stukas dont need to land every turn.
They will still be able to attack convoys.
