It would probably be best to let Apolyton grow at this point before building any more Settlers or Workers.

Very important: someone needs to make sure the Food from the Game tile is never wasted (for instance, if Apolyton has 9 Food in the box, it would waste 2 Food if it is assigned to the Game tile...assuming all other tiles it works produce 2 Food). That Food bonus is our lifeblood, and we need to make sure we use it to its fullest.

If you ever have any questions about when treaties begin and end, please check the Foreign Ministry Thread I try to keep it current as often as possible with information on each civ, what we're doing, and what is in the works.

I also try to post regular reports in the thread to summarize the past few turns of activity.

GCA ends on turn 59

The big question of the moment

1. Move the merc with the settler and alva to IC site. Fortify Hagbart. Worker begin road.

2. Move Hagbart and Alva with the settler onto IC site. Leave Mao away from the CDG warrior.

2a. Worker starts road, unprotected.
2b. Worker moves away.

3. Leave Mao away. Fortify Hagbart on the worker. Move Alva with the settler onto IC site. Worker begins road. [added]

1 allows CDG a pop at our GA. Would they take it? They couldn't hope to win the resulting war.

2a might tempt them mightily to pop the worker to delay us getting iron, while the immortals they have finished begin to move north.

2b results in a 3 turn delay to iron. But leaves no temptation for CDG.

Which one? This is not an easy choice.

The reason why I am concerned about leaving temptation for CDG is they may react unpredictablely once they see their border negotiation ploy is about to fail. I beleive we should play it safest, as this is the moment of greatest peril. Therefore, I believe I favour 2b, or 1. The clincher would be whether more of us feel that they would take the opportunity to start our GA or not.

Togas, do you think sending a border proposal at the same time we sent our turn on could be a way out?

If they receive a proposal from us, that would most likely defuse any surprise at the appearance of the settler and anger at their negotiating tactic failing.

Then we might feel more secure in proceeding with 1.

There is one more possibility, though it is a bit risky:

3. Keep Merc away, keep Hagbart protecting the worker, and use only Alva to escort the settler.

Odds would be 7:3 in our favour, should Morris decide to attack... and there is a small possibility that CDG would miss the settler being hidden "under" the warrior... I know, I know... just making the option list complete.

EDIT: and for the record, I would prefer 1, with 2b being the first runner-up.

Tired of ads?

I don't think that they'll attack our Merc. They are expecting us to try to settle this area. They are trying to passively encourage us to do a border agreement by planting that warrior there, not start a war with us. I don't think that moving into the area is great risk with or without a border agreement.

I would like to give the Border agreement poll more time to allow additional input from the team.

Should we decide to go that route, I would recommend that we send them notice that we agree to negotiate a border, and then set up a time when we can meet and begin negotiations.

If you rename a unit....does it's unit type show up on another teams display.
I thought that it didnt...but I am at work and cant check.

ie.. If we renamed the settler from "Settler" to "Warrior Wayne" ... then would they think we have 2 warriors, and not a warrior & a settler.

I would not send a merc. A GA is just too valuable to lose. I would even say more valuable than a settler.

{edit} - I would do option 2, and leave the worker undefended.

Ohh... nice idea. But I think they would see that "Warrior Wayne" doesn't have any hitpoints.

Agreed. I'd say go with 2b 3 . It's living dangerously by perfectionist standards, but I doubt they'll attack if it isn't a freebie.

So many assumptions we have to assess....

I doubt they will attack too, but being just that little bit careful is what should see us in good stead. Option 3. sounds the best to me. Better than leaving the worker in the open or risking our greatest asset - the GA.

They don't see explicetly that its a setter - they see "Warrior Wayne" and the ADM stats: 0/0/1. Of course, this could either be a worker or a settler. Maybe rename it something not saying warrior in it, and then they wouldn't know what it is - by renaming it a warrior, then they might not trust us as much or something.

2a

They have left a worker out in the open right next to our unit. It was them showing a sign of trust or a chance for them to lure us in; but I really feel it was a sign of trust and we should do the same.

If they take our worker then we immediatley know what we have to do. We lose a worker, but we know what we are up against and thus no second guessing.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Warrior WhiteBandit has spotted a Euclidian Warrior/Settler pair that is 2 West of it's position, on a mountain. The currently appear to be headed towards the chokepoint, but it's still 5 turns away from it.

We should start moving Warrior BFM SE to try to slow them down (we can't block, but we can delay them a few turns).

Heading for the choke point, no doubt. Or maybe to secure the western iron. Either way... major bonus in them crippling themselves.

CDG warrior Morris sits tight on the iron.

Patzinal warrior by-passed Bananatopia and moved to Bananatopia 9. MerZenary sees lunch!

Not much else...

Etruscan tribes North of Incensity... average against all other militaries... 12 turns to map making.

Screen shot coming...

Darn. Didn't see ET's post. Oh well...

Suffering from ads?

Actions:

N1 'MerZenary' moves 6, attacks Patzinal warrior. Lost 1 pip, no promotion.
W2 'BigFree' moves 6 (E)
W4 'Theseus' skips turn
W7 'WhiteBandit' skips turn
W5 'BFW' stays fortified. Let's give CDG a reason to hasten the settlement of the choke point.
'Settler II' renamed Worker 'Rimmer' moves 6 (E)
W3 'Alva' moves 4 (W)
W6 'Hagbart' fortifies
N2 'Mao' moves 3 (SE). This way we can play ring around the Rimmer with Morris the warrior.
W8 'not_panag' moves back to Apolyton
W9 Needs name moves 9 8 4. No sign of barbs

Economy:
Apolyton begins merc
Mingapulco building barracks
Banatopia building granary
Incensity building archer; shall be switched to Barracks if Morris leaves the iron hill peacefully

WF:
Apolyton: 4, 12 nc
Mingapulco: 10, 11 nc
Bananatopia: reset to 1, 2 after barb incursion
Incensity: 5 nc

Workers
Worker1 'Dan' finished road. Begin mine (3)
Worker2 'Monkee' begins chop (5)
Worker3 'panag' begins road (2)
Worker4 'EVC' begins road (3)

Told ya so!

Many players realise the key role of chokepoints in Civ3. In this case, however, nye is right in pointing out that they've overestimated this strategic location; with only one good city in their empire (their capital), CDG is putting too much emphasis on positioning and not enough on economy. Maybe they think they're safe from attack, Immortals being pretty good defenders?

I can't believe they're sending their next Settler there...

They could have been a potent enemy if they had built their next city near their capital allowing for it to use some of the hills, bonus grass and other tiles there.

Their economy will suffer a great deal from that poor choice.
