What is the Banana? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Forgive the ignorant question but I still have no concept of the Banana. I am only sure of the following:

1. The Banana is a complex and etheral entity that is little understood and much revered.
2. The Banana was once challenged by the orange but withstood its assault for supremecy.
3. Posting about the Banana is one of the quickest ways to irritate Ming and guarantees a thread closing when he finds it.

Can anyone help shed light on the mystery and majesty of the Banana?
