Should I join the army? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Im half way thru college so I think its pointless... Im trying to graduate within 1.5 years (but reality perhaps being 2 or maybe even 3! ) so if I can do that all that work within a year or so, benefits are really pointless. But if I don't and I suck, I might just have to. Parents are increasingly putting pressure on me to pay for school by myself and I doubt I can land a real job before I graduate and study at the same time.

Did I mention that my parents are paying thru student loan and trying to fork the debt over to me? ugh. sure its technically my debt, but give me some love you old geezers. :whine:

Would joining the army be a smart thing to do? I hate contractual obligation (which is very vague to me when I asked a recruiter who actively pursued me for awhile to join few months back) and I hate institutions. Man I hate brainwashing... but I'd whore my brain for few college funds.

I don't think you're the kind who could take orders, and be braiwashed. You'd be a poor recruit in this regard

Work hard at uni and don't make it needed to join the army. It's the best way, and allows you not to whore yourself

I'd rather have railroad spike thru my foot so I cant move while homosexual gorilla tries to rape me than join something like army or frat... but then again, people do the craziest things for money.

I agree.
and remember itīs not that easy to get out again, if you once find out that the army is not what you were looking for. being a soldier is not like a regular job.
but after all itīs your decision.

Join the Navy, we're more laid back, get to see interesting people/places, get all your damn tuition for everything paid(tm), and have upward mobility.

If you enlist in the USAF, you will never, EVER get promoted.

Army= Nothing applicable to the real world. In addition, you will never, ever, be permitted to wear civilian clothes. There were Soldiers at the base where my "A" School was.

Marines- scare me.

If you join the Navy you can go to a Nuclear engineering school (where the only credits missing for a BS in Nuclear engineering are History/english), all the way down to "Mess Specialist".

Personally, I recommend something in the Cryptologic Technician Maintenance, you'll get a lot of Electrical Engineering credits, and a automatic bump to E-4, which you usually have to take a test for.

This is not entirely true.
Through E-4 it's a time thing.
After that, it's time and tests.

Fine.

It is astonishingly difficult to be promoted.

And it's a "time thing" until E-4? What kind of operation do you Airdales run?

Piff. Have you ever heard of the Amry Corp of Engineers? How about the Army Medical Corp or Air Traffic Controllers or Quarter Masters or a million other jobs. The Army isn't just guys running around with guns any more then the navy is pansies running around in bell bottom pants.

I standby the 'no civilian clothes" statement, and while logistics corps far outnumber combat types (duh) There are far less tech jobs in the Army than, say the USN or Air Force.

Ur right too. Im all for the idea of joining USAF or Navy instead of army now. Im kinda loving the idea of sailing alll over the world to get laid with exotic chicks, but Im also fearing being alone out in the sea with group of men who are just as lonely as u are....

Go for the Marines. Enjoy physical work and get the whole experience. Maybe you get to do even combat, who knows you might get lucky. Hope for tough training, it makes you better person once you endure it. Don't worry about paperwork and the mess, you'll get rewarded by the experience and knowledge that YOU served your country and defended it. The most honourable men are the defendors. On the practical side, given what you seem like, you'd be better off just sucking up the loans and finishing school fast. Study more and party less. Get it done. Transfer if needed.

And don't be so cheap about the debt. If the education has value, you should accept the debt. And which is more important some debt or some years of your life 9if you join the Army)?

This could be part of the reason for your problems.

You lack commitment, something ANY employer, let alone the armed services, looks for in an employee.

As far as joining up goes, I didn't.. but my choices were very very limited.

If you're mechanical, why not engineers/mechanics? I've got a friend who went this route - now he's paid a fortune to fix helicopters for other people, which means he can afford his own!

That degree is really nice - but maybe the services offer an alternate route, you see. If money is your goal, then maybe Navy is best (harder to spend money while at sea).

Whatever you do, research your options and then COMMIT. MAKE IT WORK. Don't start posting any of this "I made the wrong choice" crap - just stick with it.

What did you expect? That being an adult meant no responsibility?

And if you think I'M being harsh - I doubt you're ready for the Army.

I totally agree wit you about the commitment part. I lack maturity.

I still dont like the whole conformity aspect but if I were to enter the real world I guess its rather a good idea to take a good whiff of that bullsh*t before I eat it from my employers.

Cruddy, true. Some of our staff officers went private sector too. They were working with radars and stuff like that, but they got paid dimes and nickles. So, when I was serving under them, few of them changed employer from army to private sector, and they get paid pretty good, because they're experts in the field (radars etc).

So if you do good and give your best at all times, maybe you can get your hands in some interesting stuff, and you'll be an expert of some sort. And if you do good, your services are wanted outside army too. Everyone likes a guy who has excellent service record and expertise. So it's not a waste of time.. well it's not waste of time what ever happens. But you must focus on it, work super hard and when you think you're giving it all, suck it up and break the limits until you're about to puke and your veins popping in your head. Keep your cool, obey commands, be good service man, since they are good leaders too. You'll get what you want. If you want it all, you'll get it all. But you got to work extra hard in there.

remember the golden rule of army (goes in civilian life too): Give your absolute best at all times and it will be noticed! If you do good, it's still not the best you can do. And it will get noticed if you give it all in every situation!
Don't complain, don't be a *****, be a big man and take responsibilities. Show that you are to be trusted and never brake it, even if it means a little personal injury, NEVER ever brake it. For example, if you're a good runner and they want you to run, then run like there is no tomorrow, give it your best. If you finish first, but you still didn't give it all, I kick your ass. If you finish last, but you gave everything you had, brought nothing with you to the finish line, then you're the man. Giving your best shot is always enough, if not for official limits of some kind, then to yourself it should be. Go and kick ass! Kick'em every day and don't come back but ask for seconds! WOOHOO!
