Tribunal of the Inquisition : Case of the Traitor Torquemada Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I, Pablo Winterius, hereby declare open the case of Señor Tomas Torquemada. He is accused of High Treason against the King, of Heresy and blasphemy, of conspiring against the government, of conspiring against the Church, of conspiring with foreign enemies of Spain, and of preaching Republican ideas througout Spain.

Cardinal Calamari has been appointed by me, Interim Head of the Holy Inquisition, as Prosecutor. he shall bring in evidence against Tomás Torquemada. He may call as many testimonies as he sees fit .
[ooc] Even if the testimonies are not existing characters the Prosecutor must ask for another member of our team to roleplay the testimony. This other member may roleplay as many testimonies as he sees fit, but keeping in to a reasonable amount. Let us not make use of ghosts or spirits this time, keeping to common sense[\ooc]
Then, Tomás Torquemada shall call in a defense advocate. He can take this role if he choose so. The Defensive advocate may call in his own testimonies and interrogate any of the testimonies the Prosecutor called in.
Then, after the Prosecutor and the Defense advocate have finished, the Judge in charge (I, Cardinal Pablo Winterius) shall give my veredict, and the punishment, if I find the need for any.

On a last note, please remember that the Church is to take care of both the secular and the canon issues. Forth the King itself is chosen by God, and so, a threaten to the King´s Power is also a threaten to the Almighty God.

Thus shall it be done, as in accordance to the will of the King and to the will of the Pope,
Signed,
Pablo Winterius,Interim Head of the Inquisition

[ooc]Let us make this an entertaining one. Ah, and by the way, the Prosecutor is allowed to use extreme methods to obtain confessions [/ooc]

I condemn this trial!
A man must be allowed to speak his mind. If words alone are enough to convict a man to torture and death then be wary, for the slightest slip of tongue.

My father and uncle were there when the church was recently established as the true faith in Spain, and zealots accused the Academia of heresy. These accusations were rejected by the king and he allowed us freedom of speach in our forum. Let now this freedom be granted to all people in all parts of Spain!

I strongly disagree with Senor Torquemada's ideas, but I will defend his right to have them!

Put an end to popups!

This is not a matter for the Tribunal to stand trial on. This is a direct threat to King Togas and his secular government, and a matter of treason against the King. I do beleive that I, as Seneschel of the King and purveyor of his Justice, should stand in judgment of Sr. Torquemada, and beseech the Church to hand custody of him over to me to stand trial, and declare this trial closed.

AS I STATED ABOVE, The King has given me the orders to conduct this trial in the name of the Holy Inquisition, Cardinal Thud. Do you want to teach to our King how he should do things? You certainly think that you are wiser than our King, don´t you? IN case you still keep a bit of respect for His Mighty Authority, and if you are still loyal to Spain, then step back. I might appoint you or Señor Meneñdez to be the defense advocate,if you both are so eager to protect the traitor, but this is another matter. Cardinal Thud´s orders have no effect on this issue. The Trial procedes as before.
*Turns to Carl, commander of the Swiss Corps*
Any who tries to stop this trial shall be put in the Dungeon for 3 days, understood Carl?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I...I thank you, Cardinal, and Your Highness...this is an honor, most assuredly. I only hope that I can carry out God's Will as is intended by my Lord and Savior, and my King.

(Lord, forgive me my sins...)

The man seated in the docks before you, as you see, is the son of the late, well-admired Judge Christofo Torquemada, who was found dead not long ago, slaughtered by his own hand, as it seems.

Immediately, his son ran through the streets of New Madrid shouting the now infamous speech that is nailed to the rostrum for all to see as evidence.

In short, as you have seen, what this hothead has written and shouted is no less than pure, undiluted treason.

His listeners? The common people of Spain. He was shouting out to the poor, the wretched, the working class...in short, the liberal populace. He was calling on the low class, he was calling on the peasants...he was calling on the peasant to break their imaginary chains, as they would say, and strive to build their utopia: in short, a totalitarian, nihilistic, freedomless regime. They were calling for a Republic, with a King not given power by God but elected by the Senate, and vested with as much power as can be provided short of those things that really matter. Any real bill that would mean anything could be vetoed or passed...in short, nothing would change, but the government's control would be oppressive.

This is NOT Spain.

We live in the most enlightened civilization in the world! We have a good and just King ruling over us and making the decisions! There are hardships, yes, but are there not hardships in every land with every government? The people are content. The King is beloved.

But this man you see before you wanted the King off the throne, and wanted to place himself in the Consul's seat.

Look before you. Below are some extracts from this rebellious and anti-clerical screed. The King and the Pope are all targets of his blind attacks, and his pathway is clear...Republic, or the people will rise.

quote:
And now our freedom is confiscated by a pope who has alone decided to render justice without judges, without laws ! Noble men are trialed [sic] for no reason ! Tomorrow you could be condemned by this Pope because you have parked your carriage in a wrong place ! A civilization is sinking when the historical rights of the nobles are under attack !

As you see, this is sheer doggrel.

The Pope has been granted certain powers by Church AND State. Whatever disagreement this man has with the Pope he has with the King, and with God. He says that there is no justice...

If there were no justice, he wouldn't be on trial...

He cites evidence from out of the blue, one might suspect he has no idea what he is talking about. Who have been tried by the Papal Inquisition?

Those who broke ecclesiastical law. A heretic. A murderer and perjurer to the court of Inquisition, who broke the Church's laws while maintaining that he was serving it.

But Torquemada certainly knows what he is talking about. He is, I tell you, a devious and clever man, and pouring his guile and deceit into the ears of the few disgruntled. It is calculated to take effect in the liberals among us...use imaginary burnings as a watchword for treason...portray criminals as heroes to the little men...play God.

That's what Torquemada is saying. That is what he is trying to see done. He wants to see power in the hands of the liberals and populares...he wants the King dead, murdered...he wants no less than Regicide, and a crown of olives on his seemingly pure head...

He wants the orb. He wants the sceptre. He wants the crown. He wants Spain.

quote:
How could all this have happened ?

quote:
Because the King let the Pope take over the secular justice.

Again, he drives home his blind attack. The King and the Pope are evil because they rule.

Is he mad?

A leader is supposed to lead. A worker is supposed to work, a fighter to fight, and a patriot to love his country and government, and none of these is this man Torquemada.

Servant of the poor?

Try fattened nobleman, bloated by power and beef, dreaming of a shiny new codpiece and a glorious ermine robe...

quote:
Because the King, lost in his dream of diplomatic prowess did not realize that the really powerful civilizations did not bother to talk to him; because the trade of technologies resulted primarily in our financing the research of our competitors; because we wasted our resources in badly thought adventures.

You see him...he builds his complaints...he stuffs the ears of the workers with his babble...

He attacks the King's decisions! He paints him with broad strokes! He suggests that he is an impotent young twit who knows nothing of governing a kingdom or dealing with foreigners. What sort of man would believe Torquemada's word?

What sort of man does not see the King for who he is? A highly competent man, elected by God, versatile and wise. But Torquemada does not see him this way, and he does not want us to see him so as well.

You see, of course, how he ridicules the King? How he speaks ill of all his actions? How he pours these vile and treasonous lies into thy ears?

quote:
What must be done ?

quote:
The Togas dynasty has given to Spain all what it was able to deliver; it is now exhausted and King Togas must be given an early retirement and a certificate for good conduct. Then the nobles should elect another King on the basis of a agenda aiming to master the current critical situation.

Here it is. Cometh the crunch. The treason is shown in its miserable light.

He now speaks to the nobles, you see. No longer does his call on the citizens of Spain. It is the thanes who he gives his council.

Give Togas a little slip, a recommendation for his next position. Is the King merely a butler that he can be dealt with so? So long, good and faithful servant. You've done things well, Stuffy. However, I've suddenly felt that you've exhaustated all that which you were once able to deliver. Dust on the mantlepiece, you know, old chap. Awfully sorry, what what. I'll see that Lady Bellamy...sorry, Belarmine knows how good a butler you are. You may go now. Here's your slip of discharge.

Oh, and use the servant's staircase when you leave.

Are we the masters of the King, and he merely our slave?

Are we giving out the orders to him?

Are we guiding his decisions?

Is he our faithful Spaniel who follows us everywhere, does what we say, and always remains loyal?

Are we not forgetting who wears the crown? Are we not forgetting who was ordained by God to make the decisions that matter?

Torquemada's bold and mindless treason speaks for itself. He calls for anarchy, he calls for the removal of the King, he calls for the destruction of all that is right. He calls for the removal of the balance. The sealing of the open-ended curve.

quote:
Spain is in great danger, all patriots must act quickly.

The dangers it seems, are the King and the Pope. The foundation. Monarchy, religion...all that is Spanish.

He wants us to overthrow ourselves!

quote:
The pope and his throat-cutters should be cautious : I am not talking to them but to the people of Spain who decides everything in last resort.

And once more, he speaks to the common people. He speaks to the workers, the slaves, even the middle class.

He calls on the serfs, the peasants, the land-owners, the poor...he calls on the people to come and dismantle their own country.

What words spoken have ever been so treasonous and foul?

There is only one thing to ask.

Senor Torquemada...

How do you plead?

[letter to Señor de Nuñes]

Dear Señor de Nuñes,

There is still room for freedom of speech. The Academia has, since long been replaced by the Abbey of St. Benedictus. Ther you can talk freely and express your feelings and thoughts about the Church and our faith.

Also, there is no restriction to freedom of speech than the simple rule of properness. There is but a difference between freedom of speech and insulting, herresy and treason. Do we ask too much if we demand you to express your thoughts in a proper way if you converse with those that lead your country and your faith?

Becopme a frair of the Abbey or found your own abbey (there are but a fdew rules for that in the Law on Abbey's and Monasteries of the Law of the Church.

I hope that you are satisfied with this answer,

With kindest regards,

Pope Aidun I

What? …somebody is talking to me … Ah, it is the First-Popal-Throat-Cutter Calamaro Calamari, of course.

How do I plead ? Good question, raised just in the proper time. But an easy one; I will not ask any delay to think about it, because I have made up my mind when I saw you entering this room with your funny scarlet dress and your bizarre hat.

I plead that YOU are guilty.

You are guilty because you despise the people, the workers, the peasants, the liberal populace, because you call treason a frank and open expression of opinion, as if it was better to hide our thoughts, because you need foreign mercenaries to enforce your parody of justice, and because you misspelled doggerel.

And you, sir, misspelled Papal, which is, overall, a far more serious offense.

Besides, I didn't quite misspell it...it's just the way I speak. I come from northern Spain. Are you a bigot, sir?

OOC: Besides, cut me a little slack, Senor Torquelet...I didn't want this case to be handled by the Inquisition either. In fact, I still insist that the secular court take care of the matter. /OOC

As it is, Senor, you seem to be kidding yourself.

I hardly despise the working men, I do not believe that in a Feudal system they are in control. Nor do you, I would imagine.

Besides, I never called treason a frank and open expression of opinion. You did, just know.

And, what's more, you've admitted to your guilt, which the Court must take into consideration.

And so, without further ado, I must suggest that 1) either the Senechal jolly well take control of this treason trial immediately (the slander trial can be continued by the Inquisition), or 2) I call Senor Quixote as the first witness.

I understand, Cardinal. If the King wills it, than I shall not disagree.

(to himself: I only wish, for one instance, that the secular courts would do something...)

Senor de la Civ,

As you see by this passage:

quote:

you call treason a frank and open expression of opinion

Senor Torquemada has already proclaimed his guilt in this rather odd statement. He has, as you see, admitted that his actions were treason. Perhaps we should see this as a guilty plea?

This powerful reinforcement is gratefully accepted.

The first thing I want to make clear is that I plead NON-GUILTY. The fact that Calamaro-Calamari can understand my sentence

you name treason what is a franck and open expression of opinion

tells volumes on the monumental bias build in his servile brain. *What is a franck and open expression of opinion* is what I acknoledge my statement was; and *you name treason* is the qualification with which Calamar(o+i) distorted my statement. It is quite clear that the dialectal spanish spoken in the North of Spain will be a fine excuse for such oriented misunderstandings.

I second that opinion. I demand that a secular court be appointed to deal with this case.

---

As you know, Torquemada, I did not fail to understand your sentence. I was simply picking holes away at everything you said because, well, that's what a prosecutor does.

In response to your claims, I'd like you to look at what I actually said. Anyone who read your testimony would have seen your comment, and it does appear as though you are suggesting that I call treason an open and frank expression of opinion. As I reminded you, I never did. I called your "frank and open expression of opinion" treason, and not the other way around.

And, as you know, everyone is inclined to agree with this point of view that you were inciting the mobs to overthrow the King. How can you deny it?

Persecuting Prosecutor,

Certainly a time will come when we will have to count the number of those who agree and desagree, but before jumping to the potential consequences that my statement could cause, it would be rational to decide whether its content reflects the truth as it can be perceived by a spanish citizen.

Until this is done, I can only answer to your question that an early retirement has never in history been the result of an overthrown by the mobs.

The problem I am facing now is that I don't have any person but myself left to be judge in this trial: Nuclear Winter doesn't want to be judge anymore, History Guy is already prosecutor, what makes him biased in this case. BigFree is the official prosecutor, bust doesn't want to be it in this trial because it is too fantastic. Civman2000 is Torquemada's attorney and DAVOUT is playing the accused Troquemada.

I haven't seen any of the others being involved in roleplay, or they have become inactive, like GeneralTacticus.

May I suggest handing over the control to the secular courts? Senor Thud, for example.

This case cannot be cancelled, it has been ordered by the King...but it is best left in the hands of the Watcher's courts...

If you still wish for a prosecutor...try my nephew Headwig, barrister at law.

Senor Torquemada,

You may not that it appears that the King has absolutely no desire to retire from his position, or to be parted from his throne, just as I would suspect your head has no desire to be parted from your neck. Why not confess your mistake and make it a lot less painful?

I've heard it said that the worst thing about treason is being drawn. The quartering bit is much easier, you see, you can't feel it as well.

Why not spare yourself by offering a full confession?

I don't mind who judges this case as long as he has the qualities to do so. Señor Thud is also very capable to fulfil this task. Señor Libre is but more available. That is why I think that Señor Libre can best judge this trial. It does not mean anything about Señor Thuds qualities.

If Señor Libre still wants to judge this trial, I will appoint him as Head of the Inquisition. Only the Head of the Inquisition is allowed to Judge without a tribunal.

Calanal Cardimari,

Thank you for the wise advice you gave suggesting that I confess my sins. I have been meditating ever since, reading all what said on the subject, progressively reaching the point where I must recognize that my political statement dated june 15 was wrong from beginning to end.

Indeed, Senor Libre in a short comment said that all civilizations have made mistakes, which could be understood as an indirect, but harsh, criticism of the ruler of Spain, but the world mistake has certainly exceeded by far, or even contradict, what he meant.

I have also notice a declaration of Senor Dejon, on June 17, who said :

quote:

Still, there will be significant drain on the economy to support a military to rival that of GS and drive fear into the hearts of the other civs on Bob. We must stop buying all technology, we have to research techs ourselves and trade to many to reap the economic benefit. We must trade our numerous luxuries for income. And we must connect all our cities to increase trade, reduce corruption, and facilitate troop movements.

The force I have detailed will provide more than adequate DEFENSE of Spain. If we wished to embark on an OFFENSIVE campaign, even against the Arabs to the nearby north, we would need MUCH MORE.

It is not enough to have a military that is 'Average' to the Arabs. If we build a military that is 'Average', or better, 'Strong' to the Egyptians, the world will fall at our heels.

I have been in error to not have detailed such matters earlier. I thought it obvious that we were underarmed. I imagined that Spain was "flying low" and playing a primarily diplomatic game. If there is serious interest in having serious military options that don't rely on diplomatic alliances, I will draw up hypothetical campaign plans. Please don't waste my time with more silliness like the aid package for the Voxians was.

Dejon pleasantly paraphrased my political statement with practical examples with the purpose of demonstrating how my analysis was incorrect.

It is now absolutely clear for me, as for everybody in Spain, that the kingdom has always been ruled not only in the best possible way, but is a so exceptionally effective way that simple people like me cannot fully appreciate how great that was.

From now on, I will adopt a new political attitude, starting with a new version of my statement. It will read as follows :
----------------
Cancel and replace all previous editions

There is nothing wrong in the kingdom.

We are strong
We are rich
We are respected and feared
We are ahead

How could all this have happened ?

Because King Togas has not yet retire (although he would certainly be entitled to, considering the Herculean works already accomplished), and we are fortunate that he enjoys nothing more than governing Spain.

What must be done ?

Nothing, keep quiet and have a good siesta.

Spain is doing fine, all patriots must be happy.
----------------

Thank you again, dear Calanal Cardimari, I feel like I have slightly improved my understanding of politics, and I look forward earring more sound advices from you on this matter.

Tired of ads?

Speaking of axes, chop off his head!

Oh no...sorry...this has no bearing on the case.

As for you, Torquemada, would you please stand aside as I open the window to let a little fresh air come in...

Alright, let us get something straight...

The reason you are on trial is for your direct criticism of the King and the Pope by name, and worst of all, your call on the people of Spain to take matters into their own hands on this case and change our system of government. This is treason. Saying "Oh, heavens, we've simply got one of the most inadequate science ratings around here" isn't treason. You didn't quite put it that way, did you? Not when you addressed the people of Spain, shouting for the overthrow of the King and suggesting the removal of Papal powers.

Now, may the trial finally commence? May I call a witness?
