Just finished it.

My take on the R.I.P.:

spoiler(highlight to read): Sirius was on my short list before I started, and especially with all the references to him being reckless. I was also very, very worried about Ron and Hagrid, quite a bit of foreshadowing their deaths as well. I'm not optimistic about them surviving the next two years.

However, that wasn't the book's saddest moment for me. There was one moment when my ears got a little watery:

spoiler(highlight to read): At St. Mungo's, when Neville takes the candy wrapper from his mother, and puts it in his pocket despite his grandmother's instruction to throw it away, that his room is already covered in them. Absolutely heartbreaking. Neville came a long way in this novel; far enough, in fact, that I'm also very worried about his fate.

Great book. Not sure where I put it, either #1 or #2...

Guynemer - I totally agree with you on Neville. The most amazing moment of book 4 for me was when we found out about Neville's parents... I nearly cried.

My take on the RIP:

spoiler(highlight to read): I had the death originally pegged as Neville or Snape (or both) but JK blew it two weeks ago with her comments on it. We were all caught up in how she cried when she wrote the death (yawn) that we missed the crucial clue: how painful it is to lose someone that you're really close to. The only person Harry had like that was Sirius. It's a bummer to see Sirius go now, because I thought he would have a huge role to play in the war and I wanted to see him publically redeemed and exonerated before he went, but it was inevitable, so godspeed, Padfoot.

And Guynemer:

spoiler(highlight to read): I have this feeling, after Dumbledore revealed that Neville could have been the One, that while Harry will vanquish Voldemort in the end (c'mon, these are children's books, you really think evil is gonna triumph in the end?) he'll only be in a position to do so because of something Neville does.

Besides, even if you're right (which you probably are), it wouldn't be that shocking if Harry became the first non-Slytherin to turn bad. He was almost sorted into Slytherin, after all. I still don't think Harry will become evil, but it would be a hell of a suprise.

spoiler(highlight to read): So, my biggest question after reading the OoP is "what the hell happened to Sirius"? I was waiting for the usual "Rowling explains everything in the second to last chapter" deal, but she never did explain what that old archway was or what happened to Sirius when he fell through it. Where did he go? What were those voices coming from within the arch? Is there possibly a way of rescuing him? Rowling's silence on the matter makes me think that this arch will be very important in the next two books. I'm very interested to see what will become of it.

spoiler(highlight to read): BTW, I agree with your view on Luna Lovegood. I sense a love-triangle coming up between Loony, Ronnie and Hermy. Maybe even a love-quadrilateral if Viktor Krum gets involved. OTOH, I don't know if Harry is going to have another love interest. I think that the knowledge of his destiny is going to change him, making him a loner who is more concerned with preparing for the inevitable clash with Voldemort than with mundane matters like puppy love. Harry has a lot to deal with, as Dumbledore said, and I think it is going to profoundly change the way Harry interacts with other people. We were already given hints of this at the end of OoP.

I can just see the fanfic orgy scene from that one. hehe... anyway, I think Hermy drops Krum, basically telling Ron they are just friends and were simply writing each other about something of great importance... or something. That would keep with Hermione's character, somewhat. Anywho, maybe if we keep posting in spoilers people will wonder and read this fine book .
