spoiler(highlight to read): Then again, the Harry-Snape tension might be magnified if Snape took over the one class Harry is superb at. Snape would have to work much harder to point out Harry's flaws in DATDA and it would be that much more unfair and petty when he eventually found them (or made them up). I can see it both ways.

spoiler(highlight to read): JK did say we can't be sure Harry survives Book seven, and she said it with a totally straight face, no hint that she was just saying that to keep the mystery. She meant it. (Mysterious bounce smilie ) But not in a duel with Volde I hope. Maybe after killing Voldemort, he dies of exhaustion or something. Or they fall together through the door into the whispering shadows.

spoiler(highlight to read): I understand what IW is saying about Harry dieing, and I don't think it's totally out of the question (I saw that JKR interview too), but I really can't imagine it happening. I just can't fathom that JKR would kill her off her little boy - the series is very much genre-fiction anyway, and a part of the genre is that the main character doesn't die. I can imagine it being ambiguous, though, like Voldemort and Harry are fighting and there's some huge explosion and both of them vanish or something. Nobody can be certain if they're alive or dead. I could well imagine something like that ... only better ... happening. On the subject of the "whispering portal behind the curtain": I'm pretty sure that it is some kind of doorway to the afterlife or something. Literally a "Door of Death" ... which is why Lupin could be so emphatically certain that Sirius was dead after he fell through it. That would also fit with the whispering and ... well it just makes sense more me to think of it like that.

It will be cleared up eventually I think, we'll just have to wait 18-24 months for the next book to get the answers/more clues.

A whole lot of stuff in OotP is laying groundwork for the final two books. There are a lot of unanswered questions.

On the will he/won't he die question ... JKR has already written the climax/epilogue for Book 7, which I find very intriguing. Obviously it's a given that she already has the major events planned out, but I think it's interesting that she has actually written it already (and did so a couple of years ago IIRC).
