Is it known that Harry's parents were Aurors? I don't remember ever reading about what they did for a living.

Isn't that made pretty clear in book 5? I think James and Lily were both in that picture that Moody showed Harry of the old "Order of the Phoenix" (before the Death Eaters brutally murdered half of them). I assumed from that that they were Aurors, but I suppose that wasn't neccessarily the case....

AFAIK their occupations are never mentioned. Plus, it's not like Tonk and the others appear to be rolling in money, but thats the impression given by Harry's view of the gold in Gringotts.

I have three thoughts on the matter: Insurance (lame), the Potters are 'pure bloods' ie semi nobility like the Malfoys and Blacks, Harry's mum and dad did some spy-type stuff where they netted a haul (which lends itself to another more adult series )

Lily's sister being a Dursley doesn't lend much credence to that idea, but it is one of the possibilities I suppose. It certainly is a bit of mystery.... I have a feeling it'll all be cleared up by the end, however.

It isn't. The Weasleys are members of the new Order and they aren't Aurors. Neither are Sirius, Lupin, McGonagall, Snape and Dumbledore.

Maybe we'll find out that Harry's dad was a magical assassin or something in the coming books.

But Lily isn't a Potter . The line of Potters decends through James.

I also thought that James, at the very least, was an Auror.
