college food plan Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

well, im getting 200 dollars a month for food when i get to college. now i want to skim 100-60 dollars a month off the top for music equipment.

The way i figure it, thatll leave me with 25 dollars a week for food. Now ive done a little thinking on what 25 dollars will buy me. i can go without 2 days a week without food and that will get me 5 dollars a day.

i was thinking maybe if i just invest in a hearty cereal, that may get me by for the entire week. if i eat 2 bowls a day i might just be able to do it.

what would you do if on a 25 dollar a week budget for food?

Buy a rice cooker and a 20 pound bag of rice. Eat for a month.

Also I can remember many a night where I was nurished on Raman and/or cup of noodles. They're dirt cheap, never go bad, easy to make, and don't tast to bad if you don't think about it.

Usually the meal plans can be tacked on to your student loans as well so there are no up front costs.

The rice cooker thing actually is a good suggestion. I had rice just about every day because it was a healthy stable which was cheap and making it consisted of putting it into the cooker and hitting the on switch.

NO PROBLEMO. But for pity's sake don't live on standard breakfast cereals alone.

They may have iron, the maybe have vitamins - but they don't have fibre.

You want to earn that music system with a case of piles?

Anyway, alternate the cereal with fresh fruit. If you can't get fresh fruit get cheap OJ at least for vitamin C.

If you can afford a tin of fish (NOT tuna - I mean oily like maceral) every 2nd or 3rd day, that will do wonders for your blood sugar and keep the carbs off your gut.

YOU COULD GO THE WHOLE HOG and GO VEGAN - but I doubt you are ready for this.

So yeah, starvation diet for maybe 2 months is feasible to get your sound system.

$25? Hah, a bounty of money per week. I could live on that in the UK - food is maybe twice as expensive here as the US.

Well, maybe "live" is the wrong word - try "survive".

York/NE England had that. Guy wanted a motorbike, he gets the first case of scurvy for over 100 years. That's teach him to live on oatmeal alone.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Well, for one you'd want to never eat out, then get really cheap stuff like maybe a Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac for every meal.

I will tell you now MRT, what you are thinking of is a BAD IDEA. For one the body is meant to go without food and you will regret it, and you won't be able to focus as much on whatever you are doing. But the bigger problem is a good part of a college student's(or any other age person for the matter) social life involves eating food with each other. If you never have any money to eat out, you are going to be throwing one big wrench in your social life.

But then, if you really want to skim money of the top of your food plan, don't spend it on music equipment, spend it on beer. Self-explanatory there..

Buy what you can in bulk. The bulk rice thing is a good idea. Buying lower grade meat that you can cook up and divide for the week is good.

Also go to as many campus events as possible. If my Uni is like anyone else's then there's usually free pizza/soda/snacks at many events. If you participate in students orgs, many will skim and use some of the cash for food.

If you can, work at or get to know anyone working in food services. Working food service jobs means free food.

Pool your cash with at least a few of your buddies and buy a pizza or three a week. Most pizza places near campus offer cheap 2 for 1 specials that give you a huge bang for your buck.

If you want to do well in school then get a social life. Seriously, study groups & having people to call when you really can't figure out a problem is invaluable.

Not to meantion no one gets laid by sitting in their room all day. College is fun so enjoy it while it lasts.

MRT: Partying and sexing is part oif the social bonding your going to remember. Also mixing socially is a great way to build up your network of friends which will have many advantages in a field like art.

Have you thought of joining a co-op? I can remember several people living in the local co-op when I went to UCSB. The price was reasonable and the food was included but you had to work as part of the commune as well as just pay rent.

Having a social life in college is imperative. It's not what you know, it's who you know in the post-college world that determines your success. I've gotten a few jobs because of college contacts. Hell, I have amy whole career due to college contacts.

Still not as good as fresh fruit pal. Sure, it's technically got more fibre - but that fibre isn't saturated with sugars and vitamins. Basically the gut realises it has next to nothing and gets rid of it soonest.

Remember, MIXTURE. Balanced diet. Not all of one thing.

Maybe having Pizza evening (lot cheaper if you MAKE it) and scrounge a meal or two in return.

What else? Oh yeah, freezers. Even thos crummy pint size camping ones - they can save you a bomb.

If you know how to make some kind of huge vegetarian stew/mexican beans/whatever dish (MEGA portions, far too much to eat) then a freezer helps save it till you want to reheat in a sauce pan. Just cook it up in a big pan, let it cool a little, diviide it into portions (lots of plastic packagking gets thrown away - why not wash and reuse, eh?) them cram it in to your freezer. 5 portions plus the fresh one in the pan is almost 1 weeks main meals - and you can make them pretty damn big portions.

It's not GREAT TASTING - but if you go Textured Vegetable Protein and a few spices (Garam Masala is good if you DON'T dig chilli) then yoo can churn out pretty damn hot meals for less than McDonalds do. OK, there's no actual meat in them - I've been on this sort of crap for years so I can make a pretty good chilli if I put my mind to eat.

Remember processed + sugar + no vits = bad

DIY + Vegetables + Fruit + Cereal/Rice/Bread = good.

Don't be mean and budget ALL your bread. Leave some over for emergencies like oil, salt, garlic, coffee, whatever.
