Last I heard the senate was 50-49 with one independent. I guess they lost seats in the last election.

I was totally bamboozled by the name. NEVER heard of Thurmond before now.

If we had an elected politician in office at that age he would be seen as a dramatic failure. Elected pols generally get "booted" upstairs to the House of Lords (Senate equivalent, kind of, in a real unelected sense).

Thurmond thoroughly repudiated his racist stances, and I have to respect his career as a lawmaker representing his state and his impact on American politics. He was, by all accounts, the greatest gentleman in the Senate.

Don't confuse him with Jesse Helms.

Here's at least one black man whose life was put to an end by Strom Thurmond.

Osborne was sleeping and woke to find Boss Walker standing over him with a pistol. He reached for his own shotgun and fired, killing Walker. Even in the south and even in the 1940s, Osborne was entitled to be tried by a jury of his peers and to rely on his right to self-defence. The Supreme Court had ruled just a year before the trial that the exclusion of blacks from juries was unconstitutional. Yet Thurmond allowed an all-white jury to try Osborne. He failed in his summing up to mention the right to self-defence. And when the jury duly found Osborne guilty, he sentenced him to death.

I urge you to read "'Ol' Strom: An Unauthorized Biography of Strom Thurmond'" by Jack Bass and Marilyn W. Thompson before you embarass yourself any more with support for that flaming racist.
