got your attention?

i've always seen statistics saying that the largest ethnic groups in america is german, anglo-saxon, and irish.

but the weird thing is, the first two are very rare from my experiences. almost every white person i know (mainly from school and what not) is either irish, italian, or jewish (though i never met a jewish person until high school so they're not too common) with an occasional greek or russian/ukrainian.

so what gives? where's all the anglos and germans at?

i know that irish, italians, jews, and eastern europeans immigrated to the cities in huge numbers back at the turn of the century but it's been a hundred years, so i would think that a good number of them would have done their little white flight and the number of 'swarthy' peoples would be the same as anglo-germans.

i've met fewer j's than c's and k's, but everybody still assumes that i'm either a c or a j and ask whether i come from the south or the north once they find out i'm a k.

these, once you're in america, your skin color means a lot more than the differentiation between peoples of the same skin color: whites tend to be treated the same, whether they're irish, italian, polish (soooooo many poles in chicago), greek, german, french, or ex-britishers. blacks tend to be treated the same, whether they're recent arrivals from nigeria or blacks who were dragged here centuries ago.

asians haven't figured that the internal differences don't matter here anymore, which is why there's no strong or cohesive political action group.

so on the whole, this distinction between brits and frogs and germs and what not seems kinda pointless to me, since they're all invariably higher up on the foodchain.

Quite much. The Germans had only limited crossbreeding with other populations in history, and it still shows. Until very recently, German citizenship came only from being a 'pure-blooded German' (i.e people from centuries-old German ascent in Russia could pretend to German citizenship, while Turks living in Germany for decades could not).

But Germany is a specific case.

Im German-Irish (with a lot more mixed in). and I dont know of a white person who isnt at least part english or scandanavian.

i am aware of that... i mean, i go whole days without seeing a single white person and yet white people are 70% of the us population so i'm aware there's differences... but whats with the preponderence of 'swarthy' whites over anglos and germans?

Try visiting the South and Midwest and see what kind of whites dominate.

Remember that ethnic minorities tend to be clustered in the large urban centers, while whites are more evenly dispersed.

Seriously though, I see plenty of white people in my neighborhood (the East Village). Lots of Russians, Poles, and Ukranians - but plenty of run-of-the-mill white people too. I hear there are more white people in the West Village.

I saw lots of white people in New Orleans. I saw too many white people in Dallas.

Must just be Philadelphia. Of course I drove through Philadelphia once and wondered why anyone would live there.

Not really. Lot of east germans are Germanized slavs (since the german/slavic language divide was a LOT farther west in the early dark ages than, say, Germany's Pre-WW I border with Russia), Austrians are equally mutty with plenty of Italian and ancient Illyrican and whatnot thrown in too, and all the soldiers mucking around Germany in the 30 years war certainly did their share of interbreeding while raping and pillaging.
I'm sure that Huns and Magyars and any other steppe nomads that I'm forgetting washing over Germany and on into France and centuries of close political links between Germany and France and Italy in the Middle Ages didn't do anything for Germany's racial purity either.

the town my relatives was right on the border between Germany and France. It has changed hands many times over the centuries from what I gather.

I'm not exactly sure if I'm french, or german. My blonde hair (well it's not that blonde anymore) would seem to indicate I'm german. I also have native american and English roots in me.

If I am not mistaken, most German-americans live in the Corn Belt. Scandinavians and Germans mix alot in central Minnesota. English DNA is spread fairly evenly across the country, I think.

I am part Norwegian and part German, the two most warlike europeans.

If your family comes from Alsace, odds are your ethnicity is Germanic. Especially if your family emigrated before WW1.

Most people in Alsance-Lorraine are of mixed French and German desent. Your a Gerench (GERman, frENCH).
