I don't cotton much to South bashing. It's not that the South doesn't have problems, but the North likes to pretend it's **** don't stink. Every part of this country has its good points and its bad points.

The South, for the purposes of this excercise, is the part of the country that isn't the west, the mid-west, the north-east or Alaska and Hawaii.

Music, according to my Collins Consise Dictionary, is "an art form consisting of sequences of sound in time, esp. tones of definate pitch organised melodically, harmonically and rhythmically".

Actually, I haven't chosen anything. All of America's contributions to new musical forms arose in the South but one, House music (which is from Chicago). That doesn't mean that Chicago blues or New York jazz isn't some of the finest music in the world. Even my favorite music, punk, arose simultaneously in NYC, LA, and Texas.

If the notion is, which region has been where most distinctive American music came form, certainly the South, with Jazz (and then rock) and blues and country (that is all of it). Those African Americans certainly were key to American culture.
