Actually I had a look at some articles on this. The computers in question are Blade servers with Xeons.

Apple doesn't have a G5 version of Xserve available yet. Are Pixar supposed to wait for one when they need their computers now?

Apple were never in this anyway since the losing bidders were Sun and AMD.

Actually, reading around the web I've come to realise that slagging Apple off for this is just silly. This is a non-issue as far as Apple's concerned.

Apple doesn't currently make a computer that would do what Pixar wants, nor would they want to - that's not their market. That's about it really.

If Sun had won the bid would people be saying "terrible blow for Apple"? Somehow I think not.

If Sun had won the bid, I'd enjoy watching all the investors flee from Pixar for being so stupid with their money.

I'm also confused why Apple doesn't enter that market.

Intel's profit margin is enormous on servers.

The Xserve is why they don't enter the market. They tried, nobody wants them. In the server market, people know what they're buying and stay well away from Apple stuff.

So you admit this has nothing to do with Apple, apart from the fact that Jobs owns Pixar and is Apple's CEO. All this is, is Sun losing out. And to add to it, this was back in February.

Jobs doesn't even run Pixar, John Lasseter and Ed Catmull do that. If Jobs had insisted they use Apple computers he would be in legal trouble.

However, reading around, I can see that you aren't the only one who thinks that this is evidence for some anti-Apple trolling.

I just get enjoyment out of Apple users getting a kick about Intel's financial PR guys using Macs with QuarkXPress, when Jobs' company spends enormous amounts of money on Intel's products.

Hell, I don't think Apple users show enough respect for Intel. Not only did they invent the microprocessor, they also did PCI, AGP, USB, etc. inside the Macs. And AMD designed the specific PCI controller and HyperTransport bus inside the new G5.

I see Macs borrowing a lot of PC technology, but not vice-versa.

Sun is so pathetic.

quote:
Sun has new machines that are much faster than the computers Pixar purchased four years ago or so, a Sun representative said.

The Sun official also noted that Pixar is known for using multiple computing platforms and may still be using Sun machines for some rendering. Pixar officials were not available for comment.

Emeryville, California-based Pixar is using the system for the film "The Incredibles," which is scheduled for release next year.

"What they're building is the world's largest super-computing cluster for digital animation," said Deborah Conrad, an Intel vice president of sales and marketing.

With the move, Pixar becomes the seventh major studio in eight months to switch to Intel for animation rendering, which requires heavy data processing. Other studios include Industry, Light & Magic, Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Co., and Dreamworks, according to Santa Clara, California-based Intel.

And your implication that Jobs had nothing to do with chosing Xeons is a bit off:
quote:
At Macworld in January, Intel President Paul Otellini sat in the front row for Steve Jobs' keynote as a VIP guest of Apple. Later in January, Jobs delivered the morning keynote address at Intel's annual sales conference in Las Vegas.

I don't know. I've seen a few around. I think it is making a fair amount of money for Apple and that's what matters to them. Apparently, most of them are bought by companies that use all macs to do graphics and stuff.

I don't think it's a big deal that Intel uses Macs. Presumably, the people doing the work would rather use macs for whatever reason - it doesn't count against Intel's products at all. It's the software in this case.

My supervisor used to go to this place called Grinnell College. Apparently in the 60s some graduate came back and told them to invest in the company he worked for. It was Intel and now the college has squillions of dollars.

PCs are hardly adopting Firewire. The only ones that are are the Sony VAIOs, and that's cause Sony actually developed Firewire.

Apple isn't a leader in wireless either, they're a third-rate member of stuff like Bluetooth and just adopt non-final IEEE 802.11 specs.

All corporations are criminal.

I much prefer open, honest operations like Apple that forcibly strongarm clone-makers out of business, rip customers off to the extreme and lie blatantly in advertising.

Why can't more companies be like Apple?

Ah, yes, Apple's quality.
Take a gander at Apple's forums on the new iPod -- there's tons of people *****ing about Apple's falling software quality as they try to maintain secrecy by using very small beta tests.

Apple is not in the market for an elite clientele. They don't deliberatly keep supply down to drive demand up and thus prices up (though with their high prices ). And seeing their advertising is now going for PC users, it's obvious that they aren't going for the same market Ferrari is going for.
