Interesting but they've missed the whole point about the Macintosh. People who want to buy a Macintosh don't buy one because it's cheap or because it will work with old hardware; they buy one because they like the OS and hardware/software integration. That's a pretty hard thing to pry people off. I know plenty of people at varsity who won't touch a Wintel machine because they just like the Mac way of doing things.

Linux is no threat to the Macintosh - people will keep buying Macs as long as Apple keeps going - and there is no real sign of Apple failing. Linux is no threat to home users of Windows either since it isn't much good at the multimedia consumer stuff that people use Macs and Wintel computers to do.

Where Linux is going to spank Microsoft is in the business world. It will do this for three reasons: (1) It's far cheaper; (2) you can mess around with it however you like; and (3) by using Linux you don't tie yourself to Microsoft.

The last is the most important. Microsoft might like the idea of every piece of computer equipment connecting to each other using Microsoft's proprietary software, but businesses don't. It's easy to see why, who wants to make their company absolutely dependent on one supplier?

Now you might think that this is just me dreaming. Well it would be if I hadn't heard many people working in business say exactly these things and expressing a preference for Linux (and it gets worse over time). Not because they are info anarchists or pathologically opposed to Redmond, but because it makes good business sense.

And if you need any more evidence, look at what the respective companies are doing. Microsoft has mounted a mass FUD campaign against Linux and has given away thousands upon thousands of copies of its software for nothing in an attempt to prevent companies from switching to Linux.

Has Apple moaned about Linux? No. In fact at the request of its customers Apple has integrated popular Linux APIs into its new software. Mac OS X allows open source software like GIMP and OpenOffice to run on it. Apple has provided the software to enable you to do this for free and it will be included with the next iteration of the Mac OS.

The evidence speaks for itself really.

I don't care if you think I'm wrong. If everyone is still here in a few years, it will be interesting to see what the scene is like.

You know what Asher, a MAC is a horrible computer, but that doesnt tell it has no right to exist. For some things a Mac is a wonderful thing and that includes DTP and stuff like that.
Here in Austria, every Printing company, Repro company, advertising agency everyone of them is using Macs.
I am in contact with Apple Computers since 1989 and with Wintel/Wamd Computers since 1995. I am in between the two fronts, though when asked I will always be with Apple since they are the underdog and are wayyyy cooler.
