	New confidence in the US job market? Suffering from ads?

Economists are saying that the US unemployment rate jumped from 6.1% to 6.4%, because umemployed persons have renewed confidence in the job market? This seems far fetched to me. What do you guys think?

I know people who are doing both - taking any job they can get, even with a paycut, and evaluating the market and holding out for jobs in the pay range they're looking for.

Maybe they're realizing that there's only 18 months and 17 days to go?

Or maybe eople who thought: "hey, i can ride this out until things come back up again, so i will take a few months of looking" now see that they have no more money, and that without a job again, the are screwed. So desperation could be just as powerfull as hope.

It's a plausible explanation. The reason why the unemployment rate didn't skyrocket in the recession was that people stopped looking for work and fell out of the job market. Now people are back in the job market, but out of work. Whether or not they will find work this time is another matter entirely, of course.

Very few CEO's are CEO's due to their daddies. And actually, the peasants are a lot more replaceable.

Elaine Chao and Linda Chavez were both making that point on NPR yesterday.

But what would you expect them to say? "We don't have a clue when things will pick up..."?????

Part, not all of the jump, is due to more people looking for work. Jobs were still lost as well, so at best the rate would have remained relatively flat, ad not more people come looking in.

As for why people have re-entered the marketlace for jobs: it can be either hope or desperation. Wen does the extension of unemployment benefits run out?

Some states 9 months and some 12. Everyone recieving benefits is counted. You're right about people holding out for the job they want. After their savings runs out they have to take any job. That doesn't mean jobs will be created.

So if unemployment goes to 7%, that will be a sign that workers are just bursting with so much optimism that employers can't keep up, I suppose. And if it goes to 8%, that'll be an indicator of an outright mania by potential employees.

Or we could just try Occam's Razor: Rising unemployment sucks, and Republicans are just trying to spin it so that it doesn't look as bad, which is what you'd expect them to do.

Again, the reported percentage is only reflective of those displaced workers collecting unemployment.
It says nothing about people without benefits, or the under-employed.
Home foreclosures are at a 30 year high.
Personal bankruptcy at an all-time high.

If anyone says they're confident yet, they're whistling past the graveyard.

How do you why unemployment is rising? What if the numbers show (as they might) more job seekers? I don't recall many layoffs lately.

Any chump with a little bit of "people skill" and the ability to operate Excel can be a CEO. The real talent comes in being a crooked CEO that walk off with all the money as the company fails and gets away with it.

This whole "worker confidence" thing is just spin - an attempt to make an increasing unemployment rate look good.

it's true that ceos have rather difficult jobs.

that doesn't mean it's right for them to be taking in millions in bonuses while running their companies into the ground.

if anything, they should be taking their cues from iacocca or jobs, who both killed their salaries in order to resurrect their corporations, rather than kenneth lay who boosted his salary as his business died an ugly death.
