Collapse of CDG Put an end to popups!

A couple turns ago they lost Goat City to GCA. This turn they've lost Zarigueya. GCA's military is now average with our own.

I don't think CDG can hold out much longer. I predict Elucidium will be lost in another 2 or 3 turns. After that point CDG is doomed, and we'll have to decide what to do.

Do we capture Cuido and Possum in order to get forward bases on what will be an inevitable invasion of GCA?

What does this mean for the AltSp?

I'm assuming the shift to average for GCA was an increase?

I think if CDG is falling, we ought to keep our "Happy quiet builders" image going and let GCA stretch themselves thin snapping up the little towns- the more GCA is stretched, the less we have to worry about later.

Not to mention that we have little grounds to intervene, and NAPs with both that stretch well into the future (109 for CDG, 130 for GCA).

The problem is that GCA expects to have Elucidium within a few turns. A few turns after that and they can get to Cuido and Possum. Do we really want to share a border with GCA so close to our core?

They'll likely continue building up their army and it's possible that they could even defeat CFC before too long.

I just don't like the idea of having them so close to our important cities.

I thought the CDG NAP was void if they went offensive.

They did...so we can attack.

Although we all know the pifalls of exploiting loopholes

True enough...

In talks with GCA members they all expect us to attack and egged me on to say we were going to. I denied everything of course, saying we were "busy with our jungle," but I don't see too much diplomatic damage being done. GCA expects us to attack, and we could tell CFC we had to attack to make sure that we had a buffer between us and GCA (which is really why I feel we ought to if Elucidium falls ).

Nor do I, but it will mean violating a diplomatic agreement. We may have no choice, but there will be a price.

Would the best option be:

a. swoop on Cuido and Possum putting the blade firmly between the ribs of CDG?

b. go past CDG to kill GCA, violating an agreement with GCA?

c. wait for GCA to take Cuido and Possum and then attacking them, violating an agreement?

d. Keep all agreements and live with the situation at the end of the GCA NAP? Turn 130 is about the time the AltSp has us at peak readiness, BTW.

Some of these options are really not appealing to me. I simply put them there for discussion.

Attacking GCA now is obviously a bad idea. Our army is still relatively small, has to slug through a jungle and emerge on the other side to waves of GCA fast-movers.

However, if we take Cuido and Possum we could plant another city close to the remains of Elucidium to help us springboard our offensive there, and we could also capture the chokepoint, which would mean we could land units via Galleys closer to GCA's heartland. The strategic advantages of finishing off CDG are potentially powerful.

That having been said, I don't like voiding the agreement. However, if we don't then it's very likely GCA will sweep up to our border in 10 turns, and someone (maybe CFC) could assume control over the chokepoint. Just the loss of the chokepoint is a severe blow to our strategic options.

I do not like that CDG is falling to GCA. It messes up our ALT SP. But attacking GCA would be a loss to us. So personally I think we should let GCA finish off CDG then attack them at turn 130. I would rather have GCA not CDG but weaken them until if they could not defend themselves anymore and it would not be possible for them to attack us or GCA.

By waiting until turn 130 I believe our credibility will go up to CFC and GCA. For when we said we will not attack and Trip explained we are busy with our jungle. By keeping to our word GCA will expect less of an invasion happening.

There is one thing we need to worry about. Will GCA be annoyed that we didnt help them in the war with CDG. I doubt it but it is a possibilty.

Put an end to popups!

It's time we looked at priorities here.

Our only priority is and always should be what suits Apolyton best. Until now it has suited us to stay out of all wars and stay peaceful with all of our neighbours as it has let us build up and form a plan on where we want to get to. Now there is no point in deliberately staying at peace with CDG, diplomatic agreement or not. They will be dead soon, and we must get as much out of this happening as we can. When they are gone, no-one will care. We will not have committed any actions against CFC or GCA, and we shall have given them no reasons beyond their own for viewing us differently.

Elucidium will belong to GCA soon, and all of CDG will too, unless we take a little initiative to send our troops to take Cuido and Possum, and if we can, that idiotic chokepoint also. This will give us several tangible benefits:

  • extra city or two (at least some slaves) - one more Gold tile
  • some Elite troops, perhaps
  • a buffer between us and GCA
  • the chance to expand further into the jungle (if we want)
  • the luxuries beyond the chokepoint if we can take it

True the city(ies) wil be rather corrupt, but one still has gold and at the very least they are good as staging posts against GCA if we like in the future as well as worker farms.

I believe we can carry this out without worryng GCA - we will still be nowhere near their core, and hopefully they can be magnanimous in victory by allowing poor little Poly to take some more crappy cities, whilst they keep the only real value target (Elucid). Besides, Possum and Cuido would be far more corrupt for them than us. If they were to continue their war with CFC, it would be far harder for them to defend the CDG lands against any attack we decide to launch, as they are no longer attacking in the small area of their core, but their armies are spread far and wide, and they will not have had the chance to build the troops to station everywhere.

There are of course some negative results that could energe from going for Possum and Cuido

  • the breaking of the NAP with CDG
  • increased corruption at home
  • giving the impression we like to gang up on civs

The increased corruption will be small and not affect us very much. If we maintain good relations with CFC, there is no reason for them to feel threatened. What is our angle? We are definitely not teaming up with GCA, we are merely looking out for our own safety as far as CFC is concerned, and as far as GCA knows we are responding to their call for help earlier in the war. We are doing everyone a favour by eliminating a dangerously psychotic foe and to boot we are content with just a bit more jungle!

I don't see anything in breaking this NAP - that will not change any opinions. CDG itself was a danger and screwed around diplomatically themselves by offering mock peace treaties to GCA. Despite our faithful following of every agreement, no-one is idiot enough to believe that every agreement will be followed regardless of circumstances. Everyone knows that everyone is out for only themselves, and agreements are only made if there are benefits on both sides - no-one will trust us or anyone else THAT much. Besides, times changed a lot since that NAP was signed, and we were asked for help by friends GCA against the aggressor CDG, who have proved in the past to be unstable at best. We acted in the interests of a friend - GCA and in the interests of regional stability. We helped remove a dangerous element and in doing so got such a small reward for our endeavours.

I think we should prepare our troops, contact GCA and let them know we will help them in the final end to CDG, thus helping both of us get rid of them for good. We should let them have Elucidium and we have Cuido and Possum. Will they know about the chokepoint? If not we could take it before they find out. Otherwise we can make a strong case for taking it, and partitioning the jungle between the two of us. At the same time we need to keep CFC informed and tell them we are seeking a diplomatic end to the GCA/CFC war (but we are actually only half-heartedly doing this), and we are not condoing actions against CFC. With luck their war will continue for some time, allowing us to get to the point we planned for taking down CDG, and then GCA will be in the smelly brown stuff. If their war ends we may need to move more quickly before GCA rebuilds, but they should still be the target.

I agree with this course of action. We will take a slight rep hit if we attack CDG (our legal excuse won't help fix it that much), however the gains outweigh this hit and our rep with GCA will only increase.

We should honor our NAP with GCA, though. Therefore, we may have to adjust our timetable for the ultimate attack and set our GA back 10 turns or so. Not a bid deal in the grand scheme of things. Better than breaking a NAP with GCA *and* being perceived as manipulating/breaking one with CDG. If we did that, no treaty with us would ever be worth anything.

Certainly. Now, as for how exactly to approach GCA about helping them, I suggest we contact them and mention our power rise recently amounts to us having built enough Swords to finally help out. This will certainly tally with what they have seen in the power graph/comparisons as of late (if not they can go and check to see that we were strong for a time), and thus perhaps make it seem as if we are a little less opportunistic, but that we were building up ready to help them for some turns now.

I say go for it. GCA seemed to want our help earlier. They might have changed their mind after success against CDG, but perhaps not. Assuming that it's not a double-cross from both teams (unlikely) then it's a safe bet that CDG has stripped some of their units from the border cities to reinforce the units at Elucidium. We haven't made so much as a move against them yet (to their knowledge) so they might feel somewhat safer dealing with the immediate threat of GCA and not look to Apolyton. This should leave things wide open for a good attack with swordsmen.

Also, assuming we don't get shafted with bad RNG luck then it shouldn't set the AltSp back much if at all. If we stick rigidly to non-interference while building up, and leave no room for flexibility, then we may be missing out on a good opportunity (and to get CDG out of the game).

Let me rephrase that then. It shouldn't set back the intent of the AltSp, just the way it's carried out. Instead of us grounding CDG into dust it will be GCA taking their capitol. And then we take GCA a bit later.

We have a loophole so we can attack whenever we please. All we have to do is convince CFC and GCA that the loophole is valid.

Since GCA is at war with CDG they won't give a damn. Since CFC probably fears GCA expansion then they probably won't either...

The agreement we had with CDG is that if either team attacked another team, the NAP was to be voided. This is not a loophole. It is a 'clause' in the agreement. Granted CDG wont like it, but who cares? How long will they be around for anyways?

On the next turn we can have 7 Swords ready in Mingapulco. The 7 can leave on the turn after that. Another Sword we be finished in Incensity at that time, but need to travel 5 tiles to Ming to catch the group.

Time is of the essence here. CDG's cities are disapearing faster than Iraqui troops during the war. We need to get in quickly. 7 for the intial assault on Possumopolis and Cuido de Alcohol will be plenty.

We can move those 7 Swords from Ming to the Mountain, known as "The Knob", next to Karina, 2 turns from when we recieve the next save.

Those 7 move to Karina on turn 3 then all 7 move to keyboard #8 of Cuido de Alcohol and attack that city on turn 4.

That's 4 turns from the time we recive the next save. I sure hope Cuido de Alcohol belongs to CDG still. The rate at which GCA is advancing is alarming.

We then regroup in Cuido de Alcohol if we needed more than 3 Swords to take it. If we need 3 Swords or less, we can then send the 4(or more) Swords still on keyboard #8 of Cuido de Alcohol to keyboard #6 of Possumopolis on turn 5. At the same time the Sword that finished in Incensity can meet those 4(or more) swords on that turn on the same tile for a total of 5(or more) Swords to attack Possumopolis.

The whole time we keep our NM's out of the fighting. We save our GA for GCA now!

We can regroup in Possumoplois and send reinforcements and plan the final assault on either Elucidia, if it still exits in CDG's hands, or to the choke point city.

So in 4 turns we get Cuido de Alcohol and in 6 we get Possumopolis.

I completely agree with your assesment BF. Lets keep our NM's out of this. I think CDG is weak enough, where they won't even be threatened at home, so we should be able to have a limited war.

Plus, it would make GCA quite happy as well.

[GoW-RP-War_forum_invasion]

so now it's a "clause" when all the time we considered it a "loophole" (don't make me look-up the threads...). Is the GoW-RP war messing up with the terms for these things now?

(I hope now you see the reasoning behind it all...)

I agree, and in that time we should be able to find out whether GCA will need help to the South, or even whether we can get to Elucidium before they do. I maintain we need to tell GCA we are finally in a position to help them and we are about to. They will certainly accept this - they asked us to join in, after all. We will keep GCA as our friends until WE are ready.

I have been travelling and not following up on the recent events.

I starting reading this thread, but all i find the discussion so far have been whether to attack CDG, to attack GCA or wait for GCA to kill off CDG. I think there are other options :

1. Let CFC knows that GCA is winning against CDG. Hint to them that this could be the best time for them to attack BoP.

2. Let GCA take Elucidium. Meanwhile we will quickly built several SETTLERS. Once GCA swept Elucidium, we immediately plant cities between and around GCA and CDG. We will tell CDG that we are protecting them from GCA advance. And we will tell GCA to give CDG a chance to "live", and we want peace in the continent blah blah blah. Then we Rex and take up all the land between Elucidium & the choke point.

What are your thoughts ?

Thoughts re: Rush. This just violates our settlement agreement and is just as bad as attacking them if they dont give us the go ahead and they wont.

Thoughts in general:

It sucks, but we have no choice. The one thing we didn't want out of this was a stunning victory by any side, and thats just what we are getting.

The only thing to do now is cut our losses. Afterall a perfect rep + eliminated is still eliminated. I'd rather take the rep hit and survive, personally.

Diplomatically, I dont think its going to matter what we do, our days of being "under the radar" are gone and once we do this they won't be coming back. Since we can't make them ignore us, and "friends" in a game like this is a joke, we may as well do our best to at least make them respect and somewhat fear us.

Increase Your PM Length

Thank you for making us consider altermate viewpoints, rush. This makes you one of the most valuable members of the team at this time.

1. I think we need more info from GCA or CFC or both on how that theatre is going, and whether GCA has had to divert considerable troops to eliminate CDG or whether they are able to fight well in both spheres. However CFC is the greater potential threat to us due to their superior land. What do we have to gain from GCA continuing their war with CFC, and possibly causing CFC considerable damage? Their troops are far away, in CFC land, and unable to help against any potential attack we may make upon GCA. If however we have CFC gain the advantage over GCA, this would result in GCA's troops being located much closer to home, leaving us with fewer options or a tougher fight at least. As it is we want GCA to keep their troops far away from us, giving us at least the option to attack a spread out GCA.

The FAM team have gone to extreme lengths to ensure we have made good names for ourselves with both groups - let us keep this reputation with both as well, until we are very confident of our abilities. Speaking with one team against another we are not at war with is a big risk. I would rather we not give GCA any reason
to be suspicious of us, as they are the closer threat.

2. This is a radical change to the AltSp. a document agreed upon by a majority. Admittedly times have changed dramatically, so I shall ignore the AltSp for this discussion and think on this idea apart from any plans we have made and agreed upon.

What do we gain by letting CDG live? Nothing but a neighbour who is frighteningly random, with Immortals likely left over. And there is no benefit to cities located in that part of the jungle for us for a very long time. They would be corruption hellholes and drag our other cities' corruption down with them. Moreover, it gives me the jitters thinking of sending workers or settlers into a warzone, even one in which we are not participating at present. No, I think this is risky and will not reward us. CDG is best dead, and we should take the initiative to get what we can out of this most fortunate of circumstances.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Basically I agree.

Contact CFC, and sell our situation to them first.
"GCA is doing very well. CDG has almost been eliminated as a threat.
We are going to be opportunistic and take the remaining CDG cities before GCA has a chance. We are doing CFC a favour by denying GCA any more free cities."

(Reminds me of GoW against Lux - we joined the war to deny ND taking all of the cities...of course we did not know that Lux was going to disband everything )

Once CFC has been sold... sell it to GCA.
"We are going to help you to eliminate CDG. This will allow you to concentrate on more pressing matters....like defeating CFC."

We move in swords, and snatch whatever we can. No Mercs ! Save our GA !

The only sticky point is the NAP with CDG.
We have a clause (I define it as a loophole though) that voids it if CDG attacks another civ.
They attacked GCA, therefore it is void, and we have a free reign to attack them.

However, as seen by recent DG events. Even though we no longer have a NAP with CDG, they will still cry foul and we will suffer some rep damage. RP is doing it wonderfully now against GoW.

Regs

The "other" front (namely, CFC vs. GCA):

CFC has claimed that GCA continues to have amazing RNG luck. As I mentioned previously, GCA has a leader somewhere around CFC's second iron. CFC's leader FortyJ continues to piss and moan about how GCA is so strong and how CFC is doomed and everything. I don't know what angle he's trying to pull. Maybe for us to feel sorry for them? Anyways, I don't know. When I asked him what CFC's immediate intentions were, he said that we'd have to "wait and find out."

GCA has said that the war with CDG is now moving quickly as though they "weren't fighting any units." They don't know if CDG has just plain given up, and are sure that we plan on attacking CDG ("we know you're going to attack them sometime, so when will it be?"). On the CFC front, they've recently been trying to "secure the mountains" and "haven't seen a lot of CFC units in a while" so they're "probably preparing to launch a major offensive."

Excellent. Looks like we don't need to sell anything to GCA, just go on ahead with our attack on CDG, assuming the team supports this. We will still need to talk to CFC a bit though, and of course let GCA know what we are doing. And, as Dom says elsewhere - it's time to set up a border with GCA.

I would like to attack CDG. I think it's clear not to attack with the NM's. But what if GCA doesnt want our help now? It is a small possibility.

Tired of ads?

As has been pointed out by BigFree, we have about four turns in which to act, if we are to attack CDG. I personally think that this will give us enough time to make it to their nearest cities before GCA, but it will be close, so we really must decide on our course of action now.

It's worth noting that even if we do upgrade some warriors and set them on a course to CDG, we still would have some callback time. What we are really deciding on now is whether to enter a state of heightened mobilization. The decision for war only has to be made when we cross the border, and that will give us a little more breathing space.

My own take on this situation is that we should attack immediately. The AltSP is an excellent document, but we need to adapt to the changing situation. CDG has already effectively been eliminated as a world power; no-one will cry if we attack them, and we are hardly going to have a worse reputation that GCA or CFC, who after all started fighting in the first place. We could claim to CFC that we are trying to maintain the balance of power by invading CDG.

Incidentally, I find it interesting that GCA keep on asking us whether we'll join in; they made have made some stunning advances in the war, but perhaps they will encounter fiercer resistance at Elucidia?

We have enough gold to upgrade 4 swords. I would like to upgrade them this next turn, and make sure we have enough to cover an investigation of Alcohol on a following turn.

This turn, the 3 swords (1 new from Mingapulco) can move south ahead of the 4 upgrades. If the investigation reveals a warrior garrison, or a single spear, we would have the option of proceeding with the 3 swords past the border while the 4 trail a turn behind. I think we should strongly consider taking a reg warrior or two with the sword stack.

Before advancing with swords a lone warrior pokes his nose out. If something unexpected is seen, we can then adjust and risk losing next to nothing if we decide the main body should not proceed. Something in this situation stinks, and I do not want a sword to find out that there is a stack of 4 or 5 immortals waiting for our advance.

We need to beat GCA to alcohol.
