The Internet - Isolating or Connecting People? Got spare money?

- You interact with people from all over the world in a way not possible before?

- You get new friends, pick up new ideas and broaden your horizons?

- Things you pick up on the Internet make you question yourself and your beliefs, and make you enter new areas of interest you would never have come across otherwise?

- You ignore your "real" life and friends, or maybe even worse, your sweetheart?

- You read less, take less interest in current events and, in a sense, become more ignorant?

- You say no to social events so that you can stay hours and hours in front of a monitor chatting or posting to strangers?

isolating. The real world is the only thing that matters.

That's why poly meets are so important.

What is this thing, "real", that people keep talking about?

In OT we have a great interest in current events, as long as they involve Iraq

Really? I dont see how that follows from the use of the internet.

I think it isolates but connects people at the same time. I would say that the world immeadietly around me would be far better if the internet didnt exist, however I would know far less if.

Reverse in fact. Easier access to news services and information online. Reading is fro away-from-PC time.
quote:

- You say no to social events so that you can stay hours and hours in front of a monitor chatting or posting to strangers?
Never done this. Yet.

Connecting, for the most part. I think the decline into emotional isolation is (or will be) a real issue though, since online-contact is fleeting and largely meaningless. People will get more and more dependant on online unfulfilling online contact, and need more and more to get the satisfaction of "real life", and it could become a problem for vulnerable individuals. But this will hopefully stay a very small minority.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I like people better online than off - no-one's trying to take snaps of me when I'm online (well, besides Big Brother, that is).

Can't people just go outside without being looked at? I mean, I was wearing clothes and everything.

Inflate your Upload Space

The online world gives me something to do when the the real world is lacking at times: plus it is easier to "meet" people online, since a lot of things, like looks, don;t matter, so people can be more open.

IN general, i say that it does neither: it facilitatets both, but that depends on the individual: it is a tool.

It's a tool. You can't blame a crowbar for the beating death of a person, or a hammer for breaking your thumb.

well for me, the internet has opened up completely new worlds. sometimes on apolyton, i feel like a student always asking questions and not understanding things... i would not have learned a lot of things if my only contact with the world was in the real world which to me is just the city.

thanks

So what would the world be like without the internet?

I guess it would be a lot like 1994

If you think about it, what really good thing has the internet really done beside provide free porn to millions of needy perverts?

Sure it helps in researching many things. But that research can be done in libraries. All the internet does is save time. Has it really saved any lives?
