Subways heading towards downtown are closed, they aren't letting people who live nearby into the area. Gunman hasn't been apprehended yet.

That's the attitude!

Well that would just be stupid.

But not terrorism?

Let me get this straight; it's an attack on America and our democracy, but it is not terrorism, but is a random act... They haven't caught the guy, but Bloomberg is already accusing the person(s), as well as protecting him?... I don't get it.

Looks like the dead man is Councilman James Davis from Brooklyn. Ironic, since he was outspoken about urban violence.

Try living in a city that had people slam two jetliners into your tallest landmarks, killing thousands, and subsequently have the National Guard with M-16s everywhere, subway and landmark closings every few days on terrorist threats, and being a world-recognized target as an icon of American capitalism. No one is saying such attitudes are completely rational, but they certainly are understandable. We still look up in worry when we hear a jet engine overhead.

Anyway, this sucks.But a guy jumped of the building next to my house a couple of days ago, so, somehow, I am not shocked.

The latest report on Yahoo says that the perpetrator was killed at the scene. There was also some suspicion that the shooting was related to the councilman's stance against guns.

The gunman's name was Askew. He apparently was challenging Davis for the Democratic nomination for Davis's seat on the council. Davis, a former policeman, was armed at the time of the incident but was unable to draw his weapon. After Davis was down Askew emptied his weapon into him befor being shot and killed by a New York policeman himself.
