This is a wierd thread. I never really thought that people would get so tied up in knots over the death of the Hussein brothers.

Sons' Bodies May Have 20 Bullet Wounds

By MATT MOORE, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military displayed the bodies of Saddam's sons Odai and Qusai to journalists Friday, and pathologists said each body contained more than 20 bullet wounds.

Tired of ads?

Releasing the photos was necessary to help prove to the Iraqi people that they are dead. It's not as if the US is releasing photos of random Iraqi combatants. If you can't understand this and the key difference between the two situations... you are a moron.

(I'm not directing this post at anyone... I'm saying in general )

His avocational sadism and sexual deviance are the stuff of Iraqi legend. "In his eyes," recalls a former colleague of Uday's who agreed to speak to TIME, "you see someone who can appreciate you one minute and kill you the next. It is not natural."

In Saddam's Iraq, Uday was in charge of the nation's Olympic committee; editor of a leading newspaper, Babel; and head of Youth TV, the country's most popular channel. He also ran a dreaded security force called Saddam Fedayeen, which lately occupied itself with beheading "dissidents" and alleged prostitutes. According to exiled colleagues--including his former press secretary Abbas al Janabi--he routinely abducted and raped women who caught his fancy.

But his depravity wasn't confined to sexual matters. Witnesses and survivors say he tortured athletes--and others who incurred his fickle wrath--in special rooms devoted to the purpose, even videotaping some sessions. Al Janabi says he was held and beaten nine times during his 13-year tenure with Uday.

Got spare money?

some sources i've read seem to give the impression that many iraqis would have liked to have seen the brothers put on trial.

it's all well and good, and a noble idea, but i really don't think they'd've allowed themselves to be captured alive. they seem to be the nasty kind of fcuks who'd cut off their nose to spite their face.

Yeah, because the US values the UN's opinion

Face it SLowwy, GulfWar I was about reinstalling the Kuwaiti dictators... not removing Saddam. I'm sure Bush thought he could get Saddam back under control like he was all those years during the Reagan admin when we were giving him billions in weapons and aid.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Yes, they did some nasty stuff, indeed they did. They said the other one wasn't so bad though, but the other one was a maniac. But what do you expect? I'd have them eliminated (if I was in charge) even if they weren't public figures or proved to be very evil. If they were loyal to his old man, like most sons are, then *pop pop pop pop*. Why? Because they are still Hussein, they are going to continue the legacy, and if not physically, then symbolically.

This was one of the fears of just assissinating Saddam. His work would be continued by his sons. Of course they are not a match to Saddam, but they are good snacks along the way to taking the beast himself out.

I don't have a problem with the 'Convince the Iraqis the monsters are dead' argument, but what excuse do some western papers have for showing the dead faces of the brothers emblazoned on their front page?

Each administration is different... IMO, I think part of the reason Bush I didn't go into Baghdad and take Saddam out in 1991-1992 is because he would have had to justify the cost in dollars and human lives in doing so. And the connections to Saddam and the US giving him weapons and aid would have come out and been terribly damaging to Bush and Reagan, and many of the people who were in the Bush admin were in that Reagan admin in some form or another. It was in their interests to let Saddam be and take him out later, after enough time had passed and enough documents were destroyed.
