There doesn't even seem to be a thread about it.

Al-Jazeera were lambasted by the US for showing pictures of dead Coalition soldiers during the war. How is this any different?

Because, there are STILL people out there who believe we've made this whole thing up and Saddam's sons are still alive. We've shown proof, maybe shutting up some of them... but not nearly enough.

Because one was proving to the Iraqi people that they don't need to fear the two sons anymore, and the other was shameless bragging?

I'm not pissed. I can choose not to look at the pictures if I find it offensive. It was important to Iraqi people to see their oppressors dead, so they don't come back and haunt them. I have no problem with dead soldier pictures. After all, thats what war is, it's killing people. If I find something outraging, then it would be war itself.

Given the literal translation of habeus corpus - no, I'm not distressed.

Given a lot of Iraqis wanted to see them - no problem at all.

I think the intent was a tad different, in that these are former leadership people reputed for heading organizations guilty of crimes against humanity on a massive scale.

Convincing the Iraqi people that these *******s really are dead and gone, and not just in hiding awaiting a chance to return to power is a fairly useful thing.

No Iraqi who dismisses out of hand Coalition reports of the two son's deaths is going to be convinced by the pictures.
People like that believe what they want to believe.

Did the two of them have families? (obviously other than Saddam) How would you feel about images of the bloody corpses of your family being broadcast around the world(no matter what they did)

Ask me if I give a **** about the feelings of the families of Adolf Hitler, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, or any of a number of world-class murdering *******s.

If I had "family" like those two, I'd take the opportunity to pull the trigger on them myself.

Actually, a fair number of reasonable people would wonder if the coalition had a clue who it got, given other faulty and/or contested reports.

It isn't.

Although some bloodthirsty fanatics will attempt to say it is.

I suppose it sets a precedent. I suppose there'll be a market for "dead Bush" posters.

Even with solid, easy to understand, practical reasons to publish the pictures, it still stinks. But governments tend to pramatism, particularly when the safety of their own personnel is at stake.

Blah.. more gruesome pics make the covers of tabloids around the world every day (like a guy who went splat on the sidewalk): No, I have no problems with the pics of the dead getting out, and I mean in ALL circumstances. Death happens.

Oh The good ole USA is suppose to have a higher Moral standard. The USA showed the pictures to quell any National Enquirer article "Uday & Qusay Seen Hanging Out With Elvis & Adolf At Larry Flints House"

**shrug** If it helps Iraqi civilians sleep easier at night, then so be it. Us in the West have the luxury of debating this from our ivory towers; the victims of these men do not.

I'm not pissed.

but I am disturbed.

it wasn't really necessary.

the iraqis still don't believe the pictures.

maybe we should put their bodies on public display in Baghdad.

Can we make the headline "We finally nailed the sons of *****es!" or do we still have to pretend that we are "freeing the Iraqi people"?

The pictures were quite clearly the two *******s, or identical twins. Unless someone wants to allege lots of photoshop creativity.
