Assuming TCO is still bothered with this thread-become-spamfest;
Jewelry is generally a safe bet - but try to find out what she's lacking, ie what sort of jewelry she doesn't have. A good bracelet might look very fetching in the shop, but if she's already got a couple of dozen, then go necklace.
Sorry, you're probably plenty smart enough to know this anyway, but just in case.
Same idea for the daughter - try and suss what she doesn't have, rather than a repeat buy of what she does. Her Mom might prefer something vaguely educational as well - try and use a little insight here, OK?
St_Swithin is right in the sense that women really do appreciate hand made stuff - it's not always a viable option though.
Best of luck. Oh yeah, maybe if she's into soccer, a new pair of boots might do the trick... definitely NOT a safe bet, but on the other hand, how "soccer mad" is she?
EDIT: If she gives you a funny look when you give her the soccer boots, the one liner "a girl can never have enough shoes" might get you out of a potentially relationship ending situation.
