I am European first, second and third. I do support the Netherlands in sport, but if say texas or new york put out teams for the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics, Texans and New Yorkers would support them as well.
But I am one of the new breed of Europeans, the 2nd (3rd?) generation, descendant of European public servants. Grew up in 3 countries, speak 6 languages, understand another 3.

lightblue, yes.. but you are British. That's in the heart of Europe. The heart of Europe celebrates itself. But the heart of Europe does not care the insigniciant ones. They make themselves heard and known, but when little ones have something to say, they are treated as little ones. Most people don't even know where we are at. And the ones who do, most of them don't care.
I'm not expecting welcome cards and phone calls everyday 'Hi my European friend, would you like to go fishing?'. I am European. But I don't feel it as such thing doesn't exist really. It is only borders. The heart of Europe is Europe, and they consider themselves true Euros, and the rest of us like crap, but they're just being nice about it. You see, we are a nation, a country. What if everywhere you went everyone went 'UK.. UK UK UK... hey isn't Michael Jordan from there? No.. wait... '.
You listen to me, we are not a village in a country that has to be clarified where it is. We are a country, and not knowing where we are or even not ever hearing about us is not only insulting, it is also ignorant and stupid.
I know you know where we are, but you are not majority. We don't need no one elses permission to be European because that's what we are too, but if no one knows us, then how come we can be real Europeans? When the true Euros in the heart of Europe knows they are Europeans and few other places too, but when I walk up to them, they don't know I'm European, then how come I should feel like one?
And I am not bitter or angry. But why should I stand in the backrow and be alone at the parties when everyone else dances? I don't have to and I don't want to.
So there, keep your Europe  .

red_jon, exactly! I know you're just joking, but it's not far from the truth. Close comes maybe Italy and Spain as they are know as well.
When I was travelling through Europe and met some nice youngsters, not a single person knew anything about my country, or where it is. It's not a crime to not know, at least gives good conversation starters. And the ones that had heard it only gave insults, but they didn't mean it because they were just not good with facts.
I only get 'yes you were Nazis' and 'you were commies?' and 'you're part of Russia?'. Good ones! 
I congratulate you my European friend for you are educated person and you care about Europe, because you know so much about it.
And, if no one knows you, then how can they help you, or be a part of you? We know Europe well and Europeans, but Europe doesn't know us. So there is nothing in it for us either, and we never get the same respect amongst Euroes. And I learned at a very young age that you shouldn't be where you don't belong. Europe defines what Europe is, and we're not part of it because no true Euro define 'OH YES AND FINLAND TOO! I almost forgot the commie nazis!'.
Why should we fight for you when you don't fight for us?
