I hope you're not relying on a Mel Gibson flm for anything approaching historical accuracy, or an unbiased approach to either homosexuality or British history. 'Cause you'll be served none of them.

The play Edward II, by Christopher Marlowe (himself alleged to be gay by some of his contemporaries) depicts a homosexual relationship between Gaveston and Edward II. A similar relationship existed between James VI and I and his favourite the Duke of Buckingham.

On an entirely irrelevant note, I was a pupil at a school founded by Isabella, Edward's widow, in penance for her part in his downfall and murder...

I think you may be confusing Tripoli with 'Gallipoli', by the way. I suspect the Tripoli referred to is the not very notable military action carried out by the Americans against Barbary pirates. More of a police action than a Trafalgar or Actium or Kadesh.
