I don't drink the water, but I eat the habañeros. I've never had a problem, except the beer not hitting my lips fast enough.

San Diego (and most southern California) tapwater has calcium salts and is chlorinated a bit less than your average well-maintained swimming pool. Yep, I'll have tapwater.

Down here, there's a billion bottled water places where you can bring your own 5 gallon jugs and get them cleaned and refilled with softened RO water that actually tastes good and has far less crap in it than US (AWWA standards) tapwater. Cost is 4.5-7 pesos per 5 gallons (roughly 45-70 cents).

There are areas of Mexico where tapwater is naturally good (wells located in sandstone or limestone aquifer areas, so naturally filtered), so people don't bother with bottled water that much, despite how cheap it is.

Most of the country, bottled water is so cheap and quality so much better than any mass treatment of piped water, that people wouldn't drink the tapwater no matter what utility scale treatment it was given.

It's entertaining to hear all the pinche turista myths - about having to brush your teeth in beer (just drink it, nobody here is counting ), how you can't wash your hands in tapwater, make sure you don't get any in your mouth when you shower, blah blah blah.

Last time I was in Mexico, the hotel invited everybody not to brush teeth with tap water... I didn't follow the advice, yet I'm not dead (I can't even remind having a turista).
