Sometimes, two hours wouldn't get me far over the border. Plus, with my work schedule, I wouldn't get any sleep. South of here, there's spots, but "road" conditions get pretty entertaining, and humidity is still hard to get away from on the Baja peninsula.

Eventually, I want to buy a site where reasonable security is possible, and set up two or three 1.5 to 2 meter remotely controllable domes, a portable generator, satellite broadband, and move in all the hardware and run them remotely.

My favorate thing to see is the Andromeda galaxy. It is spectacular even im my 4-incher.

It sucks that the southern hemisphere has more cool stuff in the sky than we do.

It's about to be 12' and under, GSO (ie Orion, Hardin et al) have started making 12' mirrors, so expect a flood of cheap f5 Newts in the next year or so....

You mean how far from the ocean? From where I'm sitting now, 300-400 meters or so.

There's some good mountains about 300 kilometers (by road) or so SSE with the highest being Pico del Diablo at 3095 meters, (inaccessible) but in a lot of the boonies areas, you have real problems with road quality (passable, but slow going) and wind and dust. The Baja peninsula is at most 150 km wide here, with the Gulf of California wider than that, shallow, warm, and the recipient of lots of residual weather systems that come up from the Pacific coast of southern Mexico (down in those nice, steamy tropics).

Finding good seeing conditions around here, in range that you can round trip it overnight and have a good amount of observing time, is a bit tough.
