You don't need a telescope. I've seen it pretty clearly for the last week.
Yes, I know. A telescope would be nice.

Put an end to popups!

Yep, although the difference is only one extra arc-second apparent size.

Seeing conditions will be much more important than the difference in distance from Mars' normal close approaches.

A reasonable telescope can make out some details. I can see the ice cap.

It wont be much brighter between now and perihelion (the 27th), so get a look while you can. Where I am (about 52.2 degrees lat), its lowish in the sky, to the South West, in the constellation of Aquarius. Enjoy!

I put off buying the new big gun, but I've got the old one. I can get the scope any time, since there's at least two places in SD County with 14" LX-200's in stock, but I wanted to get early on the list for this puppy: SBIG Research STL-11000M.

edit - damned framed sites. Link is corrected.

It's the first model of this new generation of CCD camera from SBIG, and they go into production in September, although they've been talking about them for a while. I had to plunk down 25% up front, which is most of the Meade 14 money, and the rest when they produce mine, but I'm one of the first 30 on the list.

Dosen't matter.

I live and work next to New York City, and even from the roof of the well-lit lab building of the plant work at, Mars is punching right through. I've only seen Venus brighter, and that only occasionally, I think.

I've seen it through hazy clouds that took out everything else except the moon -- its stunning.

I dont, only a pair of 15x (I think) binoculars. Doesn't matter, I was brought up with the idea that you can only really appreciate astronomy with the largest possible viewing angle. That means the naked eye my friends!! Now its just a simple matter of disconnecting all the street lights within a 30 mile radius of my house... see you guys later!

Yes. To be safer, look for the constellation of Aquarius, from Britain its the South-West roughly, but check its elevation locally. You cant really miss it if you're looking in the right direction, barring the moon its the brightest object in the sky, a slightly reddy/orange star.
