First you are seriously over exagguarting the rivalry and vandetta between Iran and Iraq, or arab countries in general. The fact that Arafat tried to organize a coup and assassinate the king of Jordan in 1970, didn't stop the Jordanian King from meeting and kissing with him in 1995.

Furthermore their only concrete goal is the evil USA. Iran is just as conserned about the USA being successfull in it's hunt for WMD's and wishes to do what it can to destabilize the situation, even at the price of (oh no!) laying their hands on former Iraqi weapons.

Furthermore - let's not forget the country to which the Russians escaped, and which the US and UK blamed of hosting Iraqi diplomats - Syria.

Yes, did you know that Iraq and Syria had developed rather close ties since 1991? Syria was a channel for circumventing trade barriers. Syria bought stuff, and sold it to Iraq.

And as for the Russians being such close friends with Iraq - do you remember the statue of Saddam that the US Army pulled down? Guess who built it? The Russians, for Saddam's birthday in 1998 iirc.

Well, that candle is kinda more like a holocaust. The United States has invaded, intervened in, or overthrown approximately seven times the number of countries the USSR has, and that's just from 1945 - 1991.

The Soviets were invited in to Afganistan, so it doesn't count as an invasion. The Ukraine doesn't count, either, as it was never a recognized country by anyone except, for a brief time, the Bolsheviks, before the Germans took it over. Poland attacked the USSR in 1919, and in 1939 the USSR was merely reclaiming what they had lost to Poland in 1920. In 1945 they were driving ou the Nazis, or do you think they should have stopped at the Polish border and let the US carry on the burden of ridding the world of the Nazis alone?

That leaves the "whole Balkans," which apparently doesn't include Greece, Albania, or Yugoslavia. Finally, Czechoslovakia. Yeah, that sucked, but they din't have any other viable option, given that the whole point of the Warsaw Pact was to make sure that no enemy would be directly on their European border again. Having ben invaded twice in twenty years, and the shotgun nuclear diplomacy by the US, the Soviets had no small reason to be paranoid.

I doubt you are reading history books at all, actually. Yes, the left-leaning government of Afganistan asked for help in 1979 because of an uprising by feudo-clearical reactionaries who were opposed to the freedoms being enacted for women. An uprising which was then funded by the US, about six months before the USSR came in.

And the fact that those are the only things to have come up work against this whole article, speically given that the nuclear component was burried in 1991, not at any time after.
