	Help Ecthy get his silver chain clean and shiny again! Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

So it has tarnished and now has somewhat blackish marks. It's not segmented.

I know there's some electrochemical way to get that stuff off it, just put it into some electrolyte solution alongside with some less precious metal than silver. But what kind of electrolyte should I use, and what second electrode?

Someone told me it suffices to use a NaCl solution with aluminium, but after one day there was hardly any effect.

Others say I should have zinc in the electrolyte. Use zinc containing toothpaste? Should the aluminium be a foil wrapped around the chain? Or ripped into small pieces and just put into the water?

I used to be good in chemistry, but in lessons like this I was usually sleeping.

Dissolve... err, discuss.

PS: I want no remarks about possible gayness of chains, no matter if silver or not.

seriously, it works

get a washcloth and some toothpaste. rub it hard (ohhh) with just the toothpaste and the washcloth. Then get another washcloth and wet it down and rub it hard (ohhh) and you should start seeing some of the black stuff come off (ohhh) onto the wet rag (ohhh)

Line the bottom of the pan with aluminum foil. Set the silver object on top of the aluminum foil. Make sure the silver touches the aluminum.

Heat the water to boiling. Remove it from the heat and place it in a sink. To the hot water, add about one cup of baking soda for each gallon of water. (If you need only half a gallon of water, use half a cup of baking soda.) The mixture will froth a bit and may spill over; this is why you put it in the sink.

Pour the hot baking soda and water mixture into the pan, and completely cover the silver.

Almost immediately, the tarnish will begin to disappear. If the silver is only lightly tarnished, all of the tarnish will disappear within several minutes. If the silver is badly tarnished, you may need to reheat the baking soda and water mixture, and give the silver several treatments to remove all of the tarnish.
