60+ is old? I've seen people in better shape at 60 than they were at 20. 60+ is late middle age these days, 70+ is old, 90+ is so common it's cliché. 100+? What, you want a medal or something?

No problems here unless they want to cut you off in line.

It's everywhere like that. Wherever there's a line they are: Would you be so kind my lad to allow an old lady/man as meself to go first blah blah blah.

Supermarkets, banks, public services everywhere the same.

two things:

_You are on pension. You have nowhere to go and nothing to do. I'm working to pay your wage. I have to be in a million places and I'm tired and in a hurry all the time. You have NOTHING to do and you are getting paid by me. So unless there's no emergency, please don't play that old card with me so you can get out of the place faster and go drink coffee.

_You are so strong despite being 70 or 80 that you could propably put up a good fight. Why ON earth are you complaining?

That's all.
Respect for the elders unless they dont deserve it in which case **** off

oh and the buses and trains of course. Around here it is considered a mortal sin to be sited when an elderly person stands. You have to stand up and offer your sit otherwise you're a badly raised brat.
They will start giving you those glares and not only them but most of the bus untill you get up. Talk about psychological warfare.

I have no problem in offering my sit, actually I feel obliged in a good way to do so. unless they look like former gestapo collaborators or fascists in which case there's no way in hell. However things are better now. Since I'm not 15 years old anymore there's always younger people than me that have to offer their sits before me. aging has its positives...
all in all we're a pretty good society now that i think about it

Good thing. That might be commitment material.

And I've paid over 100K into SS which I doubt I'll ever see a dime of. But, I think of it as helping support someone else's father that wasn't as lucky and prepared for old age as my father was. Most of us owe our parents a debt of graditude that can never be repaid. They worked hard in their prime to try to ensure that we would succeed. I think it's only fair.

Yes that really sucks. I have to give them a share of my trainee money twice (once for their pension, and second for med. insurance from which most is sucked up by old ppl. anyways). They get at average 3times the money I get... (who was the one working again? ...) + when I get old, I wont get anything out of the pension fund (it wont be around anymore). So Im practically wasting my money for nothing.
Their state payed pensions should be reduced to social welfare level. Its clear state payed pensions will be abolished. Why should I pay for the mistakes from exactly that generation who gets the pensions that has etablished a faulty system...

I could go on and rant about the general attitude of those old folks but I leave it for now...

Tired of ads?

You really don't understand how state pensions work do you? You have to accept that you are paying for the pensions of the retired people while you are at work, but that the generations below you will be paying your pension when you reach retirement age. Of course, many people these days are saving independently to ensure that they receive a better pension than the meagre amount the state can supply, but this does not mean that they should be allowed to opt out of paying their dues to the people who have made the society that has given them an education and a job.

Besides, at what age should we force Michael York out of society and put him on the run?

@ duke
I understand how it works...
Ppl. are now "encouraged" to save privatly for their pension...
In 5-10 years it will be obligatory...
and so on...
An oviously inefficient system gets slowly abolished...

In 40 years time it probably wont be around anymore...
I wont get any meaningfull money out of it.

Im practically giving my money to those old ppl. for free.

I dont see how I owe them anything. Education is payed for by todays workforce, not by old ppl.

They build up the land we are living in? So what? They got about the same money for their work, today workers do. They didnt do it for free, they did it for their own personal gain. I dont owe them anything and future generations dont owe me anything. Im not responsibel for anyone but me.

I see they have to live from something, so my suggestion was to give them the normal social welfare, like all others get, that havent saved anything.

Sorry for condensing your entire post into its most pertinent line, but I feel it's justified. Anyone can disagree if they like.

Isn't it a good thing that everyone else who came before you in history didn't share your views?
"I've discovered a new medicine that will cure one of the most dangerous diseases. I'll just stick it here at the back of the cupboard until I need to use it."

Suffering from ads?

Whatever is the pension system (collective or individual), the retirees consume a portion of the value produced by the active people of the time. You have to realize that the income derived from savings is charged to the whole economy. The main source of income financing the pensions in the Pension Funds are interests and dividends which are ultimately either charged to tax payers or to customers.

The collective pension (paid by the state or any other collective organization) system was invented to obliged people selfish or lacking of foresight to provide for the pension funds and doing so to earn their right to receive a pension when their turn arrives.

Under a purely individual pension scheme based on individual savings, there will be a significant portion of the population preferring not to save with the end result of becoming a burden for the society which will have to give them anyway a minimum income to live; this will be paid by the active citizens through taxes.

In all cases, the active citizens pay for the not active: children, ill, unemployed, retired. That is how the society holds together, from the very beginning. This has to be explained more clearly to all those concerned.

In the US it's different. Most school districts through High School are funded from local property taxes and state funds. In my neighborhood there are at least a dozen couples that haven't had a child in school in over 20 years and some never had children. The roughly 50% of their property taxes is subsidizing the younger generations children's education. They are also paying state income tax, (even if it's just on investment income) and sales tax and they may even play the lottery. All those tax authorities support education. So it goes both ways. If their taxes were not included in the education pool, the people with children in school would be overly burdened paying that expense. Hmmm, sound familiar.
